Interesting but we would want them to be sprung or compensated for this loco. The looks wont matter as you can't see between an A4s frames, unless it's on its side.

OzzyO.
I went through the exact same puzzle with mine, the horn blocks are invisible and as has been discussed elsewhere the primary reason people use springing is for current collection, for my LNER Pacifics I've gone over to CSB sprung tenders and all current collection from there, thus have no need for springing on the loco, which obviates suspension and pick ups and makes chassis collection easier. I also think more weight will help and good track too. Theres more than enough space in the A4 for oddles of weight.

I've just used the top hat bearings in a rigid chassis on the first A4, however I 'may' slot the middle axle to give it +- 0.25 mm vertical clearance and simply add a single CSB wire across the bush to give it some spring pressure, and, I may as a double insurance, add rim phosphor bronze wipers at the top of the wheel where it's hidden by the casing.

For the remaining locos, I might opt for springing or compensation, but my current train of thought is rigid with lots of mass and tender pick up via CSB and insulated axle boxes.

I think the A4 hornguides are quite close to A3 style so may drop for some of them for my A3 where they can just be seen under the boiler, I need to check the GA's tonight to be sure.

Aye aye!!! They were beaten by a better team so can't complain.
Yes your welcome when ever. Rob should be making a trip over some time soon so we will sort something out.

I would imagine this was taken on a summers evening as the two trains look like they were probably two of the many night newspapers trains going to Paddington to be loaded. I think the first left Padd at 23.30 for S. Wales followed by the 00.30 for Penzance. There was then a steady succession of newspaper trains being loaded and departing with the last being the 04.25 for High Wycombe and Aylesbury.

Nights at Paddington were very busy.
