1/32 Python P14's

The windows in the model look wrong compared to prototype photo.
They look a bit small, plank counting, the bolection in prototype is all but 4 planks but only 3 in model. Both seem to start in the same place, plank wise.

It's all a bit strange, given that the model has 5% more planks than the specific prototype photo (though not necessarily every prototype van).

So here's an overlay of the model photo side onto the prototype photo side:

The ratio of Height to Length isn't right, but the relative sizes and locations of the strapping and 'lights' shows clearly.

Hi Peter
I agree with you about the windows but to rectify them would make me loose the will to live! As it is there are lots of other discrepancies that need fixing so as to make it an acceptable model. If and when I can get Ken West to talk to me I'll try to get him to modify the differences. He is currently working on the 1/32 Siphon C's so when that's done maybe he will move on to the P14, but I need some more ref. details before that can happen.

Hi David
The 'in the clear' measurment is out by 5.24mm, but I didn't wish to add to any more problems for Ken.

Having looked at the prototype again I realised the side strapping is not proportionally correct. So here's a new photo of another P14 No.550 and the side I've already put the straps on If you compare you can see the height is wrong. I fitted the straps into the model's provided holes. So later today I will post a photo of the other side I've been working on and you will then see the difference.

Here's the other side photo, as you can see I've fitted new longer straps which are more like the prototype in size.
P14_Model1_3.jpg

To make these is time consuming as each one is made up of two pieces soldered together, but before that they have to be reduced in width by 1mm and then 3 holes drilled 1.1mm.

I shall now replace the ones on the other side with the same as these. There are 56 plastic 1.5mm hex bolt rivets to each vehicle, so to complete my other Python P14 I've now ordered two more blocks that each have 100 on.

I've changed the title to the Pythons as I no longer have the Siphon C (sold it) so this will be about my two P14's from now on.

One of them has now had the strapping on the sides replaced to ones of more realistic sizes, and a coat of Sadolin to seal the mdf.
P14_2.jpg
P14_1.jpg
So as to not get the sides mixed up I've put 'x & xx' on the roof beams.

I've now cut up the 24 pieces of strapping for the 2nd P14 and tinned them prior to soldering them together, then I shall drill 3 holes in each one.
Both sides require filling in all the areas and holes in the wrong place as it have done with the one above.

I decided to progress the 2nd P14 build by adding the strapping on the sides. These are now soldered together, holes drilled and ends shortened and rounded. This has only been done on one side so far and prior to this the side was painted with Sadolin to seal it.
New holes also had to be drilled.
The first photo is of the other side before painting and straps fitted.
P14 Model 2_1.jpg
I found that more filling in was required, this can be seen were I've sanded it down in the door area. I shall now go ahead and paint it with Sadolin.

P14 Model 2_3.jpg
It can now be seen as to the painted and non painted sides. The doors area has not yet dried out from the extra sanding and painting I did this morning. There are 28 Zinge Ind. hex headed plastic rivets fitted so far.
The square cut-out in the middle of the doors under the windows shouldn't be there, this has been filled in, and I will have to go back to model no.1 and do the same.

I have now fitted the strapping to the other side of the P14 model 2. last week I spent cleaning up and preparing the W/M & L/W parts ready for BC treatment. The steam/vac and screw link coupling all had to cut from a sprues and in the case of the SLC drilled out and tapped 10ba.
As you will see below it is surprising just how many parts there are.

The untreated wheels in my last post above are the ones in theses two photos

Update on my two P14 Python vehicles.
No.2 now has all it's W irons fitted and the L angle which represents the prototype angle iron.
Over the last few weeks I've been relearning how to use Inkscape, a free drawing software that is excellent.
With this I have drawn up the following parts, V hanger brackets, the end offset brackets that support the DCIII brake levers, drawhook plates.
I have been sending these to a fellow KLOGG member John Hobden who has been cutting them out on his Silhouette Curio machine and then returning them to me. Here's a photo of the fitted draw hook plate fitted with 4 Zinge 1mm rivets

P14 (2) Draw Plate Fitted.jpg
I have also drawn end hinges, louvers, and the drop down plate that goes under the doors. This enables
cars to drive through from one van the the next.

Since then I have now purchased my own Silhouette machine but I bought the Cameo model. This can take a 12" mat were's John's Curio is only 8.5" x 6"mat.
I've now drawn the window surrounds and the drop lights for the doors. These are in 20thou HIPS. Photos below.

Windows & Doors parts.jpg
This photo shows the jig I made to reduce the width of the supplied window surrounds this reduces the width from 2.1mm to 1.3mm which is a lot more realistic. The larger one is not for the P14's but you can see the difference in the thickness, above these are the 20thou surrounds that I have produced and in the next photo you can see them temporary fitted. On the right are the two drop-lights for the doors including the acrylic window, I shall glue them to the windows and half fit them into the door window recess.

More to follow.

Hi Rob and all who are watching this build.
Rob I shan't now have to tell you to have look at this now!
So here's the second P14 with one of it's end with almost all the HIPS fitted.

All of the white items are are double layered (15 & 10 thou) except the Louvers which are triple layered.
These were drawn up in the S/W program 'Inkscape' and then cut out on my new Silhouette Cameo 4 machine.

I drew these out using a GA of a P13, the P14 has the same body just different W/B and position of brake handles.
BUT the model is not to scale so I had to frig most of the measurements to make the parts fit the model.

If you look at an end view from a previous post you can see that the door hinge holes on the rhs are not in the centre of the planks!
So these had to be hand drilled in the correct place before the hinges could be fitted.

Only three more ends to go!!
P14 (2) HIPS fitted1.jpg
P14 (2) HIPS fitted2.jpg
See if anyone can spot the not intentionally obvious mistake.

PS; The buffer bodies have now been fitted to this vehicle.

I've realised I had posted a photo of a P14 side view previously but not an end view, it is something that doesn't get photographed very often so here's one from the Russell Coach books with the sun shining on it's end.

P14 560 Fire Train1.jpg
This one was the last vehicle of Lot 1197 (541-60) This lot all had 3' 7" wheels were as the previous Lot 1134 all had 3' 6" wheels.
This what I've been using for the detail for my models.

Some further progress on one of the P14 over the last couple of days.

Door & Window Surrounds_2.jpg
The ones on the right are for the doors, the upper four are the perspect windows with 2 pieces of plasticard (glued together) on each one.
The bottom 4 are again 2 pieces glued together and made to fit over the ones above.

Unlike the side windows which have the outside frames to stop them falling out the is nothing to stop the door ones from falling out.
So I shall glue each of the bottom ones to the ones above making them fit flush with the inside walls (glue or DS Tape). This will leave them inset by 1.5mm from the outside face more realistic to the eye.

Like the ones on the left cardboard sheet these were all designed in Inkscape and cut out on my Silhouette Cameo 4 on 15thou HIPS

As I said above the small side windows can't fall out the front but can do so inside, so I had to think of some way to stop this.
Using 2 each of the small ones on top of the perspect windows makes them flush with the inside face, then when adding the larger ones on top they will keep the perspect hard up against the outside window frame.

I still have to add a 2nd coat paint to the right ones and then repeat same to ones on the left.

I have also painted a first coat on all of the HIPS fitted to the sides of P14 no.2 I'm using Airfix enamel M1 as the undercoat, with two coats it covers the HIPS very well. All the windows and door windows will not be fitted until the sides are finished and had their final coat of paint.
