As a kettle builder rather a biscuit tin builder I'm still slightly ignorant of which bit is supposed to taper, hopefully someone could educate me. Everyone says the bonnet tapers but fails to stipulate in which view? Front to back, side to side or top to bottom? Judging from the photo is it in the front view tapering from the bottom of the radiator to the top? I wasn't sure if it was down to the photo slightly distorting the view
The taper is best viewed from the front and the bonnet top is narrower than the base, so the sides slope inward toward the top, I dimly recall it's about 4" or so (2" each side), about the same difference as the tumblehome on a Mk1 and we wouldn't accept flat sided Mk1's now would we
Best shot I can find and agree the angle distorts things a little,
The red lines are image verticals, the blue lines follow the line of the battery box which is physically vertical, so transpose that to the bonnet and there is still a taper, at foot plate level I know it's 4" wide between yellow line and bonnet base.
So as a very rough guess it's a 2" taper each side.
A Mk1 from centre line.
Solebar is 4' - 4¼"
Max waist line is 4' - 6"
Gutter level is 4' - 3½"
Max side deviation is 2½"
It's probably easier to see on the fuel tank front where you have a known vertical line.
And from the cab
For what it's worth, the cab windscreen is also tapered and wider at the top, but that
really isn't worth bothering about
