hi from Germany

googling around a little bit I discovered the world of British 7mm kits. I have some experience with our local German H0 kit manufacturers, but what I discovered in Britain is a revelation for me.
German steamers are famous for being the ugliest engines around, so I may just step in and find a nice steamer kit to give it a try.

regards,
Michael

have mercy with me writing English :)

Welcome Michael!

Your English appears to be better than some native speakers, so don't worry about that!

We do like pictures on Western Thunder, so plenty of illustrations of your adventures in British outline 7mm scale modelling, please.

(In fact, please share your HO adventures as well. We are a pretty broad minded lot!)

I don't agree ;)
I think the Sachsenstolz is one of the most stylish locos to have ever ridden rails:

I also greatly admire the Halle 'Ballerina':

But if you'd like to build a 7mm scale British loco, there's lots of people here who can help you.
Welcome to the forum!

The DRB Class 52 locos had a certain purposeful 'look' about them, I think. If not exactly stylish, they certainly weren't ugly!!
For really ugly Kettles you need to look to the USA!! :D

Hi Michael..

Spent a week on the Herz railway last year, and by the end of it we all wanted to take an engine home with us, they're beautiful engines and definitely not ugly.

JB.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

You are right, not ALL German steamers are ugly. This is just a bias that the folks from the southern part of Germany have. In the 1930, when the Reichsbahn took over from the state owned Länderbahn, the prussian way to design locos took over. All the beautiful saxon, bavarian, württemberg etc. engines disappeared.

My favorite engine is the "C" type of the würtembergische Länderbahn.

Smooth lines, no open pipework, looks like imported from the UK, altough it was built at the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen.

My own activities currently go away from building my layout towards building locos. Here are two examples of my activity:

This is the BR85, it is a whitemetal kit manufactured by Weinert, a local supplier of fine HO kits. The kit has been finished a couple of months ago and is fully functional with DCC decoder.

A cinder crane as it was used all over Germany. This is a nickel silver kit etched from a fellow modeller in small quantities. Quite challenging. The flange plate for the cable pulleys are about 0.7*1.2 mm. I built this kit to get an idea of my new resistance soldering unit.

So my plan for the next future is to build a 320 steam loco of the Austrian ÖBB, a precious Gerard kit that was manufactured in the 19080. People say that Gerard designed scale locos rather than scale models. We will see. I will post some pictures.

I assume that I will start to look into a scale7 kit of a UK tank engine. Any proposals what might be a good starter? I have already discovered finney7 and MOK, which seem to be the most up to date designs.

regards

Michael

MOK do a BR Std4 tank and an 8f with Scale 7 add-on packs.
For the 8F, one buys the kit for 31.5 or 32mm gauge and then buys, from MOK, a pack of extra etches for use when building to 33mm gauge.

For the BR Std 4 tank the kit is available in two forms:-

* a kit for a 31.5 or 32mm gauge model;
* a kit for a 33mm gauge model (Scale7).

If you choose the Std 4 tank then a complete set of wheels (pony / driving / bogie) with S7 tyre profile are available from the Scaleseven Group Stores.

Michael,

There's a few of us here who know about and have built Weinert kits. Such a wonderful experience!

I imagine that the Gerard kit will be good fun too, although I've not built one myself.

And, for the record, all the current Finney7 kits include frame parts for F7.

Steph (one of Finney7).

Moin Moin Michael!
I just joined WT so my greetings are necessarily belated.
Although originally from Lancashire, I now live in Hamburg.
20.03.20.HAMBURG.1.1.jpg I am only 500metres from the Hamburg-Kiel/Lubeck line.
So I thought I'd post a TriX 6x6 pic I took back in March, as a welcome present....

Hi Peter, welcome at WT. I see you are a fan of the last real German Diesel engine. I love it if they start pulling out their train of a station. There is nothing that compares to the sound of 76 Litre displacement with their turbochargers in full operation.
We have them in double traction in the southern part of Germany. Doubles the noise and fun!

Hi Michael or Peter
Do you know if there's a DCC SOUNDFILE available for this loco?
