Genghis's WR builds

I don't get many WR engines to build, so this might be a sporadic thread, but I am lucky enough to be building a (Martin) Finney 47XX. I started the build in my regular (well not very frequent) thread, but will continue here.

Finding the Finney 7 instructions was a boon: these are an excellent example to copy.

I wasn't happy with the initial build, so the scoop was demolished and repositioned with the deflector plate in the correct place and the scoop moved forward a smidgeon so that the angle of the stays is more consistent with the casting. I then sprayed the assembly to date, thinking that it would be easier earlier than later. then all put back together and the brake pull rods refitted right way up. The new Finney instructions and drawings were a big help here.

While the paint was drying (doen't take long with the outside temperature being 37 degrees (not F)), I did the first part of the valance and step assembly.

Then tried them together:

Next jog is to complete the frames by adding the springs and hangers.

I've got a Hall to do later this year and noted the tender extended axle wheels. I've not delved too deeply or broken into the kit yet but how do the wheels compensate or are they all just fixed outside bearings, in which case how do you get the wheels out later if you ever needed too.

The extended axles are of the 'screw in end on a square' variety, but the only way to get them out is to spring the sides. The main reason I did the panting now before fitting the axle castings was a fear that springing the sides with the castings in place was going to result in them no longer being in place........

The rear axle is fixed. The other two slide up and down in the (thin) frames with a compensation beam between.

I wonder if the thin frames will be a problem with time. If you know of somebody with CAD skills he might be able to knock up some overlays for the inside to beef it up a bit.........................

knock up some overlays
It's in hand and they will allow the wheel sets to be removed. No one has ever commented about wear to the frames, just the inability to remove the wheels for painting. Production of the new frames is in the queue, just don't ask when.

Good idea. There is plenty of room outside the wheels: I needed to use the supplied packing washers to restrict side play.

The afternoon was also good!

Tank former, coal hopper, front plate overlay and coal doors fitted. I tried everything together to see if it all fits and of course it does.

I have prepared the tank top overlay and division plate but will hang fire on fixing these until I am a bit fresher. This will be followed by the tank sides which require the flares to be formed: much better to do this at the beginning of the day rather than later.

I'm not so sure about that - sometimes I find it better to do this towards the end of the day, particularly after the first beer but before the second. In the programming world it's referred to as the Ballmer peak. (thanks to XKCD ) Replace programming skill with modelling skill

Although I have yet to decide on a modelling equivalent of Windows ME that would avoid a defamation case against me.:D

No alcohol in the blood stream and not as much time at the bench today as I hoped for but a good day.

Fitted the tank top and side overlays. Would definitely be easier with an RSU but I got there with no problems. I haven't completed the corners of the flares. This will be done with low melt once nearby fittings have been soldered in place.

One more day at the bench should see this finished I think.

Well one more day at the bench has come and gone and not quite finished. Still needs the general tidying up and most of the whitemetal adding. The whitemetal castings in the photos are just placed for effect.

I was slightly stumped by the fireiron tunnel fitting until it struck me that the rivets provide the answer!

I had a look at the loco box contents. This includes a packet of hornblocks for the compensation. Trouble is there are 6 in the packet and 8 required so it looks like a purchase is in order unless somebody can advise how to have a compensated 8 wheel chassis with one axle fixed.

I recall a similar conundrum. If I had any clue what I did with the remaining four, you could have two of them...

Likewise in my kit!! I look forward to any answers?!

David, I'm fairly new to WT and not sure how to PM you, but I'm happy to pay the full price for the set of horn blocks, take what you need and next time you're in the UK post the remainder to me.

Regards, Deano.

Hi - it's not difficult when you know how. Unfortunately it's one of those things is that the developers have tried to make simple combined with a clean simple interface and manage to hide this functionality behind the simplicity.

Anyway if you click on a user id in the left hand side of a thread it should pop up an information panel about that user on which there should be an option to "start a conversation".

I hope that helps.

Not much to show for several hours at the bench. The tender is just awaiting final cleaning up and priming: no photos yet.

Time was spent assembling the coupling rods and three quarters of the hornblocks. Just waiting on delivery of the others. It is always worthwhile taking time with these parts.

Four of the hornblocks have been modified as per instructions to take the rear beams. (not that the photo shows it!)

It's always worth taking the time to get parts of the running gear right, as it saves an awful lot of time trying to find the errant part when the chassis doesn't run correctly. I have several T shirts. It's been one hellava lot easier since I invested in a chassis building jig.

Not had much time at the workbench in the last few days as I have been preparing at work not to be there next week. Early start for me tomorrow as I have the 18 hour flight home to contend with. Just home for a few days sorting some urgent Gladiator bits and then back on Thursday night. Hopefully the additional hornblocks will have turned up.

I am pleased with what little I managed today though. Basically frame erecting:

I have also sprayed some 'Tamiya metal primer' on the tender body. Not 100% sure of this, so am hoping I can get away with a can of Clostermans in my suitcase on the way back.
