A (nother) China Clay layout

Thank you Andrew, both for your kind offer of help and for your comment, especially as Wheal Elizabeth was a layout I followed over on RMWeb.

I've taken the plunge and ordered a clayhood kit, hoping to rectify the underframe issues along the way.

If you’re just doing the one, Justin Newitt of Rumney models does an etched brass kit for the Clayhood. Of course it’s an option if you’re doing more than one too! It’ll just take longer.

Thanks Jon, another thing to look into then.

I think I'm going to use the BB017 micro layout baseboard from Scale Model Scenery - I just need to do a bit of measuring when I get home and before I place an order.

Talking of ordering, I've ordered some lengths of flexi track today...this has snowballed quickly from an idea!

BB017 is a bit littler! Less is more?

I smiled reading the last line. The idea has grown legs as the saying goes, full steam ahead now!

I'm planning on doing 3, maybe 4 clayhoods. The Rumney Models sets look great, but I'm strictly a plastic model builder - I just don't have the skills for anything that needs soldering!

Yeah, BB017 is smaller than my original 4 x 1 plan, but it might work...but that's why I need to measure up first!

Seems like I've gone from a bit of idle daydreaming to full blown plan very quickly! Not sure whether that's a good or bad thing...I know SWMBO will think it's the latter! :D

I'm back home, and I've had the measuring tape out. BB017 would have been great length wise, but I'd ignored the fact that it's only 220mm-ish wide.

So instead I've opted for 2 x BB001 end boards and one BB003 centre board. This'll give me a footprint of just under 3.5 x 1ft.

I've placed the order...no going back now!

The Kirk kits were for GW diag O14 5 plank which were the standard clay wagon before the diag 1/051 clay wagon (which became the clay hood). Both were an end door tipping wagon for discharge at Fowey. Interior floor planks were longitudinal to aid this, later over sheeted with zinc.
Dia O14's were fitted with spoked wheels, 1/051 3 hole disk wheels.
I've got 15 diag O14's which I got from Colin Ashby before he retired.

Wagon nome more or less complete apart from a few triangular brackets to be added to the underframe.

Buffers are from the ever excellent Lanarkshire Models.

The white plastic strip inside is to brace the sides, as one has bowed inwardly overnight.

A representation of the hinge bar has been added from plastic strip to replace the kit built one that I broke!

Replacement underframe from Parkside looks OK to me - what do you chaps think?

I’ll be interested to see how well they go together and robust they are.
Tempted with the new wrapping paper box ones, as I don’t have a layout at present.
Cheers

I've dry fitted one of the end modules tonight to get a feel for how they go together before committing to glue and it was a doddle, took all of about 2 minutes.

It seems pretty sturdy however, unlike the Tim Horn boards, there's no bracing included (although the boards are shallower) and I'd be interested to know if they are going to need bracing in the long run. This would add further weight though and the light weight of the boards was one of the positives for me, so we'll see once I've assembled all three.

I'm going to be modifying mine slightly to enable me to frame the front at a later stage which will unavoidably add weight.

For anyone that's interested in these boards, here's how they look assembled:

Really lightweight and simple to assemble.

My initial plan was to have a curved backscene. I actually don't think I'll bother now, but I will be adding a one piece layer of something to hide the joins.
