I've just received this among all the details of upcoming concerts at the O2.

Is this for real? If so it's rather wonderful. Recycling on a grand scale.

I reckon it's almost worth the drive to go and have a photo session. Wonder what Yorkshire Dave, Tim Watson, Peter Insole and others will make of this? An ideal subject for one of your paintings, Peter?

BTW, Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is scheduled for 2022.:)

According to a letter received from HM Government, my period "Shielding" had officially come to an end, so I would be allowed to cautiously come out and play. One of my sons had found himself furloughed for a second time and was likewise suffering from a bout of cabin fever.

We had often discussed the prospect of taking the two little persons down to London, but we shared concern about how they might react to their first experience of the Tube. Number one grandson has a sweet nature and is a bit of a cowardly custard when it comes to anything fast or loud. His younger sister is perhaps a little bolder, but otherwise a charmingly girly girl. We decided at short notice that as the weather forecast was good, and the Underground might still be fairly quiet, to go for it.

Suitably furnished with all the required gear, including face masks for the five adults in the party, plus ear defenders for the littluns, we arrived at Hainault station for the start of our grand tour.

Number one was fine, if somewhat nonplussed, and appeared to wonder what all the fuss was about? Number two was fine also, up to the point when our departing train ran clattering and squealing over the first set of crossovers. Her face contorted and she was clearly about to scream when her mummy said;

"Don't worry ..., it's only the noise the wheels make on the rails!"

The girl paused for a moment, then replied;

"Oh, OK!"

And it was!

Hainault to Woodford, then onward to Mile End, change over for the District Line to Embankment. Lunch at Waterloo, Riverbus to Greenwich, DLR to Bank, Central again to Holborn, then Piccadilly Line to Leicester Square for a visit to the Lego shop. Walked through Trafalgar Square and down beside Charing Cross.

That was when she screamed!

She did a dance with sheer delight though. We had not said anything, but she had obviously recognised the architecture of Embankment station as we approached, and even while still at a fair distance!

Later, while sitting on the seat beside me, she earnestly declared:

"Grandad!" - "I r-e-a-l-l-y like underground trains!"

When we finally got back to Hainault and were gathering up to leave, she suddenly let go of her minder's hand and nipped across in front of me. Fortunately, I had my camera handy and just managed to catch this, albeit unfocussed moment:

"Goodbye Underground!" she said, gently patting the sign!

Oh dear.

I fear it may be best for all concerned if we avoid the fluffy pink tube train. The little lady might go into full-blown meltdown if we make any attempt to extract her from it ?

Is it another 83 tube stock recycle?
Tony
I'd like to think so, Tony, but the more I look at that image the more convinced I become that it's one of they virtual reality gizmos......

I suspect that no recycling was involved in this project.

Having said which..... there are yer acherl tube trains recycled as accommodation for small businesses around The Roundhouse. Been there. Seen them.

I guess you are right Brian. There's also some 83 stock stuck on top of a viaduct near Shoreditch I think. They still get about those poor old things. They were the runt of the litter it seems.

"You can take a man out of the city, but cannot take the city out of a man."

I am a Hainault boy!

Used to watch the old, red painted, Standard stock trains rattling along the embankment between Fairlop and Hainault from my bedroom window at Trelawney Road.

The replacement '59/'62 stock was still brand spanking new when we moved away. Since then, the increasingly tatty '92's have had essential "life extension" overhauls, and it would now seem that they will probably outlive their predecessors in service?

Where do the years go?!

Pete.
