2mmfs Kyle Of Lochalsh (an Extract)

Having just joined yesterday I thought I would share one of my layouts in 2mmFS.

It started as a layout in a boxfile (in 4 x 300mm sections) and I flew it in my hand luggage to the UK to appear at the Burgess Hill model railway exhibition in 2010. Having then sat packed away in the boxfile for 18 months, Dapol released the class 26 and so I decided to give the layout a makeover including building the station building, final detailing and transfering it to an IKEA lack shelf as a permanent layout.

The detailed build and revamp has been described on RMweb, however I attach a few photos and should they be of interest I can provide more or answer any questions on it.

The scenic area of the layout is 600 x 122mm...

Hmm, 2mm you say? would not have guessed.

600 x 120mm you say? go on, you are kidding me.

Congratulations, a terrific model and some stunning photographs - particularly the second and third from the top where the backscene and the angle contribute so much to the "is it real?" factor.

Good looking PW and S&Cwork - do tell more.

regards, Graham

Having visited by train back in the day, (it wasn't entirely sunny;) ) I can say that your brilliantly minimalist piece of work has a good deal of the atmosphere of the place.

A great piece of railway modelling:thumbs:

Many thanks for all your kind comments.

I can confirm it is 2mmFS and is only those dimensions...shall I post the set of 'photos with a € coin for scale' ;)

The backscene was courtesy of a photo kindly taken (and stitched together) by Gary of 'Glenuig' layout fame (his layout was an inspiration in my building of this...and of course Ian Futers too who remains a hero...) and it replaces the earlier blue sky backscene which looked a bit 'Club Med Holiday brochure'...I think this one conveys the mood a little bit more...and if you can smell the fish...then I guess its working!

Here's a few more photos from the layout, starting with a couple of rtr locos that have been detailed mainly the Farish class 24 and the Dapol class 26 (the underframe still needs to be adjusted to suit the no.) The station building is made of card and is a reduced version of the original but I hope it helps convey the sense of place...

The last photo in the previous post is the one... ok, the hawser of the middle tyre needs some attention. Otherwise:-
[a] what says that this is a model?
what fixes the scale?

Your engines look pretty neat and, to my eyes (squinting because of the smuts from our kettles), only the cab glazing, in the head on shots, says "model".

Tried Big Blue dieseee-saals from Pete yet?

Thanks Graham - I had better dig out that € coin photo then :)

If the photos help to blur the scale of the layout then I take that as a great complement - Many thanks indeed.

Welcome aboard Pete.

Stunning model.

My future aim is to do Kyle in 7mm, in the garage. Getting the 26's & 27's sorted from Heljan bodyshells & got most the other bits to make them. To start with.

The 2mm track is a huge difference, well worth the effort. I do like 2mm it opens the door to so many possibilities and a total 360 to 1/32 or 7mm.

With all those tasty diesels becoming available from Dapol & Bachmann, not to mention the new MK1's & MK2A's........... the possabilities for full length trains indoors are becoming very tempting indeed :)

Building 2mm track is a bit scary though :D

You're talking yourself into it :) I like the idea of the train in a landscape

Fantastic piece of work Pete, very impressed
Are you using natural light for your photos? It certainly appears that way, they look very accomplished.

Welcome to the forum btw, good to have you onboard :)

I remember seeing this layout 'over there' at the planning stage, as a mock-up - in fact I saved the pictures - but utterly lost track of it; I had no idea it had been completed - and it looks fantastic!!! Those locos are amazing too - I appreciate your hand on them Pete, but even so, N Gauge has certainly come along way in recent years!
