I hope that you are going to paint this beauty in a livery which is "as built, circa 1910'... and with S7 wheels - 'cos I think this beastie would look great on the GW&GC Jt.

Getting back to the CCT. On Thursday night I had a go at the roof and the fittings to make it removable.

I am still not 100% happy with the roof so I will probably revisit it once I have the formers sorted.

I initially ran it through my rollers to get the basic shape and then annealed each edge before making the tighter bed with my Metal Smith Drilling table - this is a substantial metal plate that is drilled and tapped at intervals and comes with clamps and a selection of different sized rods for assisting with making tight bends in sheet metal.

I then did a bit more work on getting the formers that I made earlier fit at either end and in the middle.

Still catching up on the week's progress on various things another thing that I managed on Thursday evening before going out to start on the building was putting the transfers on the Gas Tank Wagon.

That's another one ready for weathering - indeed it's now weathered (last night's endeavours!) but I need to have a look at it in daylight to see if am happy with it and to take some photos.

Nice build, will the roof just be a push fit or have some sort or resistance so to take the roof off you have to use a bit more force?

Cheers

Hi Simon,

It's the first time that I have done a roof like this - I usually just solder van roofs on. But because I need to glaze it I borrowed this technique from another modeller who used it on a cab roof. I think that the idea is a push fit but I suspect that once it's painted it will be quite a tight fit.

A posting by Jim Snowdon on the Guild forum has given me a few things to think about on this one.

He suggests that the seating for the roof in the kit is designed for a scale full thickness roof not the the thinner sheet of brass that I have used (0.3mm). I am sure that he's right and this accounts for my struggling to get the roof to fit as I would like. A bit more thought needed on this one methinks.

Another thing that Jim points out is the error on the end door drop flap hinges - they have been etched as one piece when they should be separate in order for the drop flap to drop.

These things are sent to try us....

More by good luck than planning it turns out my roof was around 1mm too wide, which worked in my favour in so much as I could cut some more strips (1mm shorter) and solder them inside the roof to make up the required thickness and bring the roof out to the edge where it should sit.

It all fits much better now.

I also managed to separate the end strapping without much trouble too.

Well done Rob,
I've tried to find a photo of one of these and can only find the one with the CCT behind the D9 pulling into Hull Paragon, which has appeared in a couple of publications, presuming that you know of it !! ??. Seems to have been a very photo shy vehicle !.
Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony,
Sadly I haven't found that one - the only photo that I have seen is on page 55 of Historic Carriage drawings vol 3 by Peter Tatlow and it's one of the earlier(?) versions without windows.

Can you point me at the publications that it has featured in so that I can see if I can hunt up a copy?

Rob,
Locos illustrated 90 Robinson GC 4-4-0's page 11.
Great Central remembered D.L. Franks, page 91.
These do crop up on ebay ......when you're not looking for them !!.
Cheers Tony.

Looking great Rob, the final version of the roof looks spot on and as Richard says not an easy task to form that. I'm sure my Dad has a copy of Great Central remembered and annoyingly I nearly bought the locomotives illustrated whilst on holiday in Cornwall !! I'll scan the picture for you Rob if I can find the book,
