Great to see your thread back Dan. and nice to see your doing some modelling again:thumbs:

Maybe we might even get to see Western Rifleman soon;)

Rob:)

Thanks Rob, it's good to be back!

Funnily enough, I was going to crack on with Rifleman a couple of weeks ago. The plan was to finally glue the cabs/sides/roof together and in order to do that, I had to bolt the cabs to the chassis first, to ensure they were in the right place. The brass inserts (in the cab floors), that the bolts go into, were installed years ago, but do you think I could find the bolts in the box?....!

An e-mail to Laurie at JLTRT, saw some more bolts winging their way towards me (thanks Laurie), but in the meantime, I cracked on with the Hawksworth. Still, it needs doing, so it's no loss!

Hi Dan,

Your coach build looks good, and I'm looking forward to seeing it progress, along with Western Rifleman.

Do you remember us chatting when we met at Richard's nearly 2 years ago? Only seems like yesterday - doesn't time fly by so fast??!!

Anyway, glad you've got more time for modelling again :)

I am not an expert on Hawksworth carriages but form photos it looks like the gutters are missing from the roof moulding. The line of 'rivets' holds the bottom of the gutter in place so this strip should be slightly proud of the carriage side and have a square gutter sticking out above it by an inch or two. So an extra strip to add after sorting out the waviness of the moulding. Hopefully, someone will have drawings of the cantrail detail.

Hi Dan,

welcome back, I trust all is well with the domestic scene. The Hawksworth is looking very good, I'm looking forward to more progress photos soon.

cheers

Interesting to note that the gangway door opens to the right in the first photo and to the left in the remainder of shots.

The gutters are supplied as separate etchings (you can just about make them out in the illustration in post # 11), but are not positioned immediately above the sides - they sit a couple of mm above the side/roof joint. I won't bother fitting them until I've reinstated the roof detail that is coming off soon!

Hello Dan -

Could I ask - did Hurn Models send you the correct sideframes for the full brake yet?

I'm still waiting for mine about 4 years down the line!

Best,

David Parkins

Actually, it's the other way round, but see caption below 2nd photo! I just happened to take pictures from whatever direction the carriage was pointing at the time.

Hi David

I'm not sure Chris has done them yet. I believe he was having issues finding someone to do the patterns and was thus, going to do them himself. How far he's got is anyone's guess, but I was going to bend his ear at Telford.

Hi David,

Rumour is that they are finally done and will be available soon (i.e. Telford), probably best to remind Chris he need to send you some!

Two weeks worth of night shifts scuppered any chance of modelling recently (I was too knackered!), but over the past couple of days, I’ve managed to do a little more to the Hawksworth.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I wasn’t happy with the waviness of the roof, or the way it overhung the sides in places. Also, the rivet detail (probably, actually screw head detail), was poorly defined in places. I decided to smooth all the detail off with some fairly coarse sandpaper (including the raised panels) and attempt to reinstate it using thin styrene (or possibly, self-adhesive labels) and Archers 3D printed rivets of suitable diameter and pitch.

The latter are in the post at the moment, but in the meantime, it was time for some preparation. I measured the size and relative positions of the raised panels and also the number of “rivets” and their diameter & pitch….

Once this was done, the roof was bolted & Araldited on for good (using the slow-setting version) and the bolt holes were plugged with Milliput….

SNV34923.JPG

24hrs later, out came the sanding block (but I did remember to transfer the dimensions to a piece of paper first!)….

SNV34925.JPG

No side overhang now and the Araldite has done a good job of filling any gaps too….

SNV34926.JPG

The ends of the roof still need trimming back and there are several low spots here and there along its length, so I'll probably have to go through a few priming/sanding cycles before the roof is smooth enough to reinstate the details. :(

That’s all for now – more updates as and when.

p.s - I managed to glue the cab floors into Western Rifleman's cabs the other day and hope to get the cabs/sides/roof glued together soon!:thumbs:

I grabbed another couple of hours at the workbench this evening and elected to address the roof end overhangs on the Hawksworth. This took longer than anticipated, so I only managed to do one! Anyway, the roof is deliberately moulded over length for the builder to trim to size accordingly….

SNV34929.JPG

SNV34930.JPG

The instructions suggest trimming the roof ends during a temporary test fitting earlier in the build and I quote “Now trim the ends so that they are flush with the outer non etched faces of the coach ends.” Through personal choice, I’d already bolted and Araldited my roof on, but the trimming procedure is obviously the same.

The majority of the end overlays are half-etched away, to leave just the edge beading, the ends of some grab rails and the portion above the gangways proud of the surface. To avoid damage to the grab rail ends in particular and also to try and trim the roof in the same plane as the ends, I applied several pieces of masking tape to the half-etched parts of the ends, so as to be level with the non etched areas….

SNV34933.JPG

SNV34934.JPG

A while later and the masking tape seems to have done the trick….

SNV34935.JPG

With the end overhang sanded, it was apparent that the roof end did not display a constant thickness throughout its curvature, so I blacked the end with a marker pen, in order to make it easier to see during final shaping….

SNV34936.JPG

This is the end result….

SNV34937.JPG

SNV34941.JPG

I’m pretty happy with that - If I’d followed the trimming instructions religiously, the centre part of the roof end would be flush with the full thickness etch above the (yet to be fitted), gangway. Looking at a photo of the prototype in a book though, there was a definite overhang there, so that’s what I did.

The next session will probably see me tackling the other end, but that’s all for now!

Neat Dan, like it!
I quite fancy one of these myself, and note an earlier posting about the bogies; what's the issue? I had assumed they were provided in the kit.

Thanks Steph. The bogies are indeed included with the kit, but although they're correct for the passenger Hawksworths that Hurn Models do, they're not right for the full brake, which should have a heavy duty variant. I think Chris Hillier (Hurn Models), was having difficulty getting casting patterns made and think in the end, he did them himself. I believe he's hoping to have the H/Duty bogies available at Telford, so I may well flash out on a pair and keep the ones I already have for a passenger variant at some point in the future.

A little more progress on the Hawksworth tonight saw the “A” end roof overhang dealt with. Although I was pleased with yesterday’s progress on the “B” end, I wasn’t actually looking forward to doing the same thing again and must have spent about 30 minutes, just looking at it, trying to muster some enthusiasm! :(

Eventually, I told myself I would have it finished by 22:45 and was surprised to knock 15 minutes off that estimate. Here’s how it looks now….

SNV34946.JPG

With a few minutes to spare before my unofficial deadline, I slapped some filler on a few dips in the roof (though white filler on a beige roof is a bit tricky to actually see - sorry!)….

SNV34945.JPG

I was going to fill the roof by spraying/rubbing down a few wafts of primer, but I found the filler whilst looking for something else and this is a much quicker way of doing it. I will of course, need to prime it later, in order to reinstate the missing roof details using Archer’s 3D rivet transfers….

Excellent work Dan.

I have heard people have used these rivet transfers but never actually seen any close up results. So i will be watching with interest on this stage very closely.;) Could you post pics of each stage ....appplication , then with paint over etc.

I look forward to more progress pics soon;)

Thanks Rob. I've never used these transfers myself to be honest, so I hope my efforts aren't too embarrassing! I did find some Youtube videos recently on how to apply them, but don't have a link I can post. Shouldn't be too hard to find if you wanted to see them, but you have to like American accents!
