Thanks for all your kind comments, very much appreciated. Here's the companion 6-wheel Brake Third to diagram 519 basking in the glorious autumn sunshine. Again built and painted by Danny Pinnock, with the base colour tweaked, weathered and finally glazed by me. Bags of character with the wooden beading, the large shell ventilators and the big guard's steel-cased lookouts. The plate at the guard's end indicates that it is part of the Haughley and Laxfield branch set.

Thanks again all.

Well spotted Ian! Of course the carriages should have screw couplings, but my customer uses Lincs couplings and has chosen to fit 3-links presumably* because they don't interfere with the magnetic bar of the auto-coupler, and their presence, albeit incorrect, looks better than a bare headstock. Besides which, my part in this was a lick, spit and tarting up, not rebuilding :) BTW congrats on the Telford comp. I couldn't make it this year, but seeing some of the entries here on WT I'd have had a hard time choosing which to vote for.

*a bald-faced assumption as I don't use auto couplings myself!

C/C&C Andy? Sorry but I'm having a Homer Simpson morning as I was up with one of the kids during the night.

Of course; now that a gallon of coffee is percolating around inside the old noggin it makes perfect sense. And what were the GE playing at with crimson in 1919 anyway?

Aha! I'm not that dopey (oi, quiet at the back...). I have a BTH Type 1 long-term shelf queen which may or may not end up GSYP.

Now that would be a sight to see. I think only one of the class managed to make it to BSYP, so GSYP is about perfect.

It's a Steve Beattie kit which was to be a Christmas project a few years ago, but resulted in some serious head-scratching as the w/m castings are poor and the resin ones worse. One day, given the right frame of mind, I'll prod it with the hot spanner again, and slap on a ton of industrial grade filler, but currently it's dropped right down my priority list.

She's already made a sneaky entrance on the Love Lane thread care of Mick, so here's 46448's curtain call before she heads for a little Essex branch line in Oz.

It's a Finescale Brass offering in 0F which came to me ready painted and lined, but needed the standard chimney replaced by one of Darlington's tall and skinny jobs for which I couldn't find a drawing anywhere.

46448_02.jpg

I had several photos of this and sister engines, but the camera angles always seemed to play tricks, and it was difficult to capture the exact shape. I even resorted to measuring up a 4mm one from Comet, just to get some sort of base line, and looked at old drawings NER chimneys built by Darlington to get a feel for the sort of shapes the Works used to produce.

46448_03.jpg

In the end I threw lots of dimensions and sketches at John Birch who played around with using his 3D CAD package, and overlaying it on photos it was like, 'bit more of a taper here, bit more of a flare there...' until it looked right from as many angles as possible. The file was sent to Shapeways and through the letterbox dropped three 3D printed chimneys (just in case I ever have to do another!)

Of course all the engineers are now staring at the floor, holding their heads in their hands and muttering profanities into their beards, but as I've said elsewhere, I'm not really an engineer and if it looks right...

Lovely!

I hadn't realised it was a FS brass model when I first saw it which is a tribute to them.

I have one of these to superdetail - mainly lubricators, cylinder details, and a full set of cast N/S valvegear from Laurie Griffin. I reckon it would then stand comparison with the best kit-builds.

Sorry, didn't mean to steal your thunder:(

I've yet to meet someone with micrometer eyes! Though some do proudly proclaim to have them, usually the less freshly scented ones with back packs in my experience.
By it's very nature all modelling is a compromise somewhere, it's just how or where and at what level you apply or accept said compromises.

Anyway, if it looks right, then there's a fine chance it will be right.

Having seen it in the flesh I'd be quite happy to have it, even with all the warts and bow legs below the skirt, it has an evenness of detail which as a whole works very well in my eyes, but then I've always had a soft spot for these and their tank sisters, I think I can foresee one in my collection in the future, though not Finescale Brass, too rich for my flexible friend you see;)

I've not dealt with many RTR locos, and was wondering what to expect, but have to admit I was very impressed with it Richard, and it's a shame the range is coming to an end.

Don't worry Mick, thunder not stolen - I'm not that precious. Hold on, what am I saying? You owe me, chum! ;) But not in sausage rolls and coffee...
