Hi All...

Information seems to be a bit thin on the ground about tourist stock carriages, and I know next to nothing about carriages generally...

I have a rake of Kirk tourist stock that I sprayed the wrong green a while back and desperately need re-spraying.. Anybody know what colour they would have been in BR days?

Thanks muchly..

I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't have received 'normal' livery colours, i.e., 'blood and custard', but the question is: how quickly? And at that point, my knowledge, such as it is, runs out.

British Railways passenger stock liveries are usually pretty easy to work out.

In 1948 it was decided that corridor stock should carry the crimson and cream, while non-corridor and non-passenger stock should be plain crimson. (There are exceptions to these rules, such as corridor fitted parcels stock which was plain crimson, but the basic principle remains.)

In 1956 it was decided corridor stock should be maroon, with lining and non-corridor should be plain maroon. This was modified such that by 1957 the regions could have different colours: WR wanted chocolate and cream, and SR went green; the other regions pretty much stayed with the maroon liveries, not adopting fake teak on the ER, for example!

This all changed again in 1964, with the move towards blue and grey for corridor, and plain blue for non-corridor. This is a bit outside the request by JB, but did make for some interestingly untidy formations on mainline trains.

As has been pointed out, though, if you're modelling something from the early days of BR, up to about 1951 or '52, the pre-BR liveries were still to be seen occasionally. It all depended on when a coach went into the works, and whether it was deemed worth repainting something if it had only just been repainted by the previous owners.

I hope that makes sense.

Brilliant, thanks Heather...

I found some similar text last night, but whilst holding baby until 2am this morning it was far too much of a chore to try to understand... Your text was much clearer.. :)

So having decided on blood and custard, there seem to be two Halfords options for the carmine... Ford Red and Vauxhall red...

Anyone have any preferences..?

These will never be state of the art models and will have a light dusting of weathering too, so I shall swerve Enamel and Celly this time.
