Fulminators

In the blurb on my Reely Grate layout I mention the Reely Grate Fulminator and have often been asked what is it? Well here goes....
Reely Grate Fulminator

Invented and originally developed and patented by R.J. Pulson who sold the rights to Jacob Reely in 1912.
The prototype only had a single port whilst the Mark II had an additional Q type connector on the left. However, the version that first went into production was the Mark IV quickly followed by the Mark V which had a vastly improved thermo-coupler and Interocitor making for a 0.5 - 1w mW interface with Asdic. It’s about 18ins high and 4ins in diameter with an N type connection on either side including a Resonator 50 ohm with a 1/4 wave coaxial cavity. The length of the centre line can be altered within the mechanism which supports a 2m bio-plasmic optical reader in port1 and an antenna in port2. The device was used almost exclusively in anti-submarine warfare in conjunction with Asdic in both Wars. There is no photograph of the device in the public domain and no drawings are kept in the factory as it still remains on the most secret list. As an aside, the flange on the edge of the rear interfracitator could, in an emergency, be used for getting boy scouts out of horses' hooves. For the less technically minded it's a bit like a crystal set in a cocoa tin only bigger.
;) Isn't modelling FUN.

I think I might have one of these in the back of my garage. My Grandfather swore that its use was his secret for why he was the county pigeon race champion for 13.5 years running back in the day.

I'm sure that you all will have spotted that there is no mention of a mark III which was an absolute disaster due to the first trials of solid state electronics by the encapsulation of the circuit in a solution of dry casting resin, especially and secretly produced by I.K.B, no not Isambard, but Isiah Kenneth Buffey.
The Reely assembly technicians had to be quick though, as they had little more than 100 nanoseconds before the compound went hard. So any re-work of faulty units would have been a real challenge that would have required a hand held machine especially developed for the job resembling an S7 jackhammer. Subsequently this version was quickly dropped and dare I say from a great height. The device was used almost exclusively in both World Wars for anti-submarine detection in conjunction with Asdic. Later according to archive documentation at the BBC a Mark IV Reely Grate Fulminator was encapsulated in the navigation system of the very first model of the Tardis. The Mark IV was still relatively unstable at that point in time and had much to do with the Tardis's rather erratic navigational performance probably due to the flux invertor and differential vane linkage. Stabilized power in the Mark V is via a system of magneto variable turbologic instead of the more usual intro-confibularitory inverse lexiphonetic generator. Work continues to improve the pandodermic novotrunion encapsulation using amulite and carbohexophenol. –

Development of the Fulminator continues at a pace and the current production model is a Mark IX .

Audrey Allbones (MD) aka AA and Raymond Archer Corbet. PhD aka RAC announced to the MOD an exciting new research programme bringing together the four main threads into a singularity, Bio thermic Resonance or BR. These four units of electrical and mechanical research were as follows Geo-dynamic Wave Rectification (GWR) Lexiographic Neutral Energy Radiographic-Pulses (LNER) Lazer Molecular Synergy (LMS) Solar-organic Resonance (SR). Defence Minister Raymond Albert Yarnold and General Ulysses Newham said that this will make Britain a leading player in World defence. In a statement to the assembled press AA hinted that the Mark X will be hand held version allowing greater flexibility.
I really should get more.

Interesting coincidence. My daughter who works for BBC R & D on a joint project with Japanese TV on 5D spherical television was told about the Japanese attempts to produce a fulminator. The first attempt in the 1930s was developed to launch an attack on Pearl Harbour, the well known Hawaiian jazz singer, but failed in tests when its guidance system went haywire on encountering free form drumming.

A second attempt at a miniature version in the 1960s was (possibly) a success but someone dropped it on the floor and it was never found. Subsequently a rather bizarre theory has arisen that the occasional bouts of discombobulation among leading Japanese scientists that always seems to follow major scientific conventions is attributable to the miniaturised fulminator being lodged in someone's briefcase.

Just been handed this photo in a plain brown envelope, no names no pack drill. It's a Mark X hand held version seen here being demonstrated by Audrey Allbones, how do I know? Well I recognise the nail varnish.;)

No, I'm sorry, you've fallen into a trap here. This is clearly the outwardly similar early Bing electro-mechanical DCC chip prototype. It never went into production as the then technical team couldn't get the operating system down to 'only 2 wires'.

And even if the team could achieve the "only 2 wires mantra" there is the small problem that early Bing locomotives were probably clockwork... :( .

But look closely, it is clockwork, just like the early analogue computers. This could well be the first ever loco chip.
Truly amazing.

How long until some bore comes along to complain that you are not being serious* and are just titting about?

Is that S7 or finescale titting about ;)

Back to the thingamajig, it's a nice steampunk phone case, I like steampunk especially the quirky hardware like aerial aircraft carriers and battleships or other zany vehicles, those of a filum disposition will recognize soft core steampunk in the film 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Sean Connery) and slightly harder core in 'Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow' (Angelina Jolie and Jude Law) Lots of Fulminators in there.

Ok that's that anorak given it's yearly airing! And, firmly locked back up again

Anyway, y'all just jossing, heres a genuine Zeus Fulminator!

Of course it's a phone case as there are no drawings or photos of what is a very secret device (see earlier posts) As for laying a brass pot on its side with a couple of add-ons' and claiming it to be a Fulminator, absolute tosh. You'll be telling me next that the Earth is round.

Some years later than has been suggested here Rockwell Automation and GMC developed the Turbo Encabulator, in many ways the true descendant of the Fulminator as we all know. Recently I was amazed to come across the original promotional film:

They didn't use rivets on that model of fulminator, they were all fixed with loctite 1001, a rare adhesive developed after the accidental spillage of liquid solder onto a floor recently polished with Johnsons Klear
