Scrap or Preservation

This has puzzled me for a while now.

Sometimes it's a fine line.

I am really intrigued by the whole RTC fleet. To me, all the old vehicles should've been saved, for the future generations for info.

So I find it hard to believe what I saw today. I'm 99% sure the below picture is of DC460000, in Sims recycle / scrapyard, nottm, taken by myself today.

Sorry but if all of the old stock that the RCD had, had been saved what use would it be to any preservation group? Think about the skeleton coaches that were used on test for the APT, Etc, Etc.
If you want it offer the scrap men the price for about 40tons of steel (steel prices are about £80 per ton) so at a rough guess about £3200 that could do it, then you have to move it and find a home for it, then you get the big one. Upkeep it for as long as you own it. If you can run it on the "railway" and make some money out of it that's very good.

Or do you just think that someone else should do it?

I may have been a bit harsh, but I was not been sarcastic. If YOU want a vehicle to survive You have to start looking at doing it yourself (along with a like minded group) then you have to think about the cost of owning it and how to make money out of it. Then you do have to maintain it.

The vehicle in question would only be a shell as all of the working bits would have been removed and sold for scrap or reused (if possible). Think about some locos and rolling stock, some have been in preservation for over thirty years and are the same as when they were bought or in worse condition and some of them are more historic than the vehicle in question.

If you can't preserve a vehicle then the next best option is to collect as much data as you possibly can before it's gone,

I'd of been banging on the door asking if I could have a quick wander around and banged off a whole load of detail photos, 20 mins, in/ out bish/ bosh 200 detail photos saved for future generations. They'd probably say no but no harm in asking ;)

By all means I'm all for free speech and respect for everyone.

Being involved with the preservation and restoration of the real thing you don't have to tell me about what is involved. We've all seen things preserved that should have been scrapped and things that were scrapped that should have been preserved, think Cl22 (fits both scenarios for some lol)

I would've loved to ask to take pics, but I didn't have the time. I'm thinking of getting in touch & find a time to get down before scrapping.

Unfortunately Ozzy is quite correct. Also, you have to find somehere to keep it and don't assume your local preservation society will be jumping up and down to hire it from you. They probably have lots of vehicles already rotting away with no interest in working on them and no funds to pay for them, taking up space and looking tatty. Sad, but true.

If anyone would like to help with a 120 year old carriage 90% restored and under cover (we're very lucky) near Aylesbury I would be absolutely delighted to hear from you!

Sometimes photos, dimensions and salvaged parts are the best one can hope for - I've broken up many bodies and part-bodies for spares over the years.
