Not gluing baseboards to bench tops

A piece of 24mm ply is about to do duty as a bench-top on which five baseboards are to be built. I've been told that a coat or two of polyurethane varnish will stop PVA glue from gluing the baseboards to the bench. Do the collected sages of WT agree? If so, do I need to use a non-water-based one? Or will a more user-friendly water-based one do the job just as well?

The old woodwork benches at high school were treated with some form of lacquer for that purpose. Seemed to do the trick back then! Didn't seem to stop us from doing other silly things with chisels and hammers though.......

Or cover with polythene film / sheet?

Excellent idea. But do varnish it first, water-based would be fine. Give it three coats, it will then stop any spilled liquids from soaking in. It is also easier to keep the bench clean, just rub it over with a damp cloth every five years or so !

I am reminded by my Good Lady that we have a shown curtain for use when textile paints and glues are being used in bulk etc.... bought from a charity shop so not expensive.

Thank you. Not up to Jerry's standard of workmanship by any stretch of the imagination, hence the long shot to prevent revelation of my egregious errors. Next stop: fitting the pattern-maker's dowels and the over-centre catches to connect the five boards. Happily the latter are adjustable so my lack of accuracy shouldn't be too fatal! Incidentally they weigh a little over seven kilos each at this stage.
