Thing is though, I've never seen a fire on an engine change colours, it's always a constant orange (or hopefully when you're on the move) white..

I couldn't agree more JB, fires on locos don't flicker as shown on many models, they are a constant light, ranging from orange yellow, to yellow, and through to white when working hard - the latter so bright that you can't look at it.

I think the flickering idea comes from people viewing an engine rush by at night, and the ash pan appears to flicker (with damper(s) open), as spent coals drop through the grate.

Sounds like an idea for a toy train to me.

A bit like having bright lights in loco lights that were oil lights. Or only just about the same power.
I would say don't do it.

.....when you look under the boiler at the valve gear you can see that the boiler stops prematurely, and so I have extended it up to the front of the firebox.

And I have finally got round to posing the excellent Andrew Stadden crews.

Holidays next, so a week break during which time the valve gear will have fallen onto my doormat. So hopefully valve gear next.....

....back from hols and the nameplates have arrived. So several piercing saw blades and a R4 Afternoon play later and;

They're Diane Carney ones, 702 was a Dubs engine so has diagonal works plates too. Valve gear castings still not ready yet so it looks like I will have to do the brake gear next, although it will hamper the fitting of the motion later :mad:.........

You know what JB I am having the same problem. Good weather = biking, hiking, barbeque etc. etc.... And you have a young child, so I don't know how you find time to draw breath..

....I have made some parts of the vacuum system for the loco.

And here they are attached to the loco. There are also some brackets for the brake cylinder and some safety chain eyelets.

All the excess solder etc. has since been cleaned up! Next will be the operating mechanism and pull rods for the sanding boxes......
