Warning panels - this is my own mix using humbrol gloss yellow and a spot of pink and orange , I dont use rail colors as they dont really look right and dont give a glossy finish , wheras humbrol does. The rail grey , is just Precision rail white, im not really convinced by railmatch or phoenix's interpretation of rail grey. If you look closely at the border between the yellow and grey you can can see the nose grilles are too far forward on the body, as the yellow warning panel doesnt clear the bufferbeam cut out correctly... strangely the grilles are wrong by different amounts on either side of the cab...
more soon

I'm not sure I agree

Look at this photo of a 37/5, it looks like yours the yellow hasn't cleared the buffer beam cut out

Then look at this one of the same loco after a repaint, here the yellow does clear the buffer beam cut away, just, yet the the line is till on the edge of the grill, so I would suggest the line at the bottom isn't straight.

Hi all , a little update on the heljan western , ive finally got round to fixing the incorrect windscreens , changing them from black to golden ochre , ive also altered the bufferbeams to golden ochre including the buffer housings, so this should represent the loco as it entered traffic. Tomorrows job is feather in the paintwork aroud the headcode boxes . Cant wait to get the nameplates on!

Time for a long overdue update - Next up is an easybuild class 108 - to make it a bit more interesting I chose one of the Paddington hybrid units P212 , formed of a DMBS and a DTCL originally from different sets - Shawn at easybuild kindly supplied me with a set of 'Trailer' underframe fittings for the composite car. Usually the kits are sold as power twin sets , rather than power trailer sets. The real unit had some roof vents missing here and there on both vehicles, so thats a dead easy feature to model, plus as you can clearly see , one car has a small roof destination box , an t'other has a large 4 char headcode box. ive built the unit with the roof attached and chassis separate, as per the instructions, which are great. The only thing to note is for a 108 the bufferheads in the kit are a little oversize - I popped them in the lathed reduced them by about 1.5mm.

Painting this thing in NSE livery was a challenge , normally its a simpe case of looking where the stripes correspond with stuff on the bodysidess , window frames , hinges bump stops etc, but as the easybuild units are based on mk1 sides, the proportions and position of everything is different, so i had to improvise and mock up the stripes with masking tape first to see that they looked ok..If you mess up the proportions of the stripes , it then throws out the 'upsweeps' at the cab ends , or vice versa and you have a weird looking paint job!
So far so good

The trailer comp , complete with its missing roof vents.
At the other end I've made a start on the roof plumbing - the diagram for this in the instructions didnt quite match prototype photos, but then , neither does my little bachmann 108!

Next job is to fit out the interiors. On the DMBS ive picked out part of the window frames in silver, but the trailer car has them all painted in NSE blue - another nice little detail , and another reason I like DMUs

Ta for now!

Seats fitted to the DMBS
Ive stuck these directly to the chassis moulding to get them sitting at the correct height. You may just be able to see , some of the partitions have also been added. These are glued to the reinforcing streachers than run across the bodyshell , positioned at each passenger door. I say 'some' of the partitions - I deliberately leave every other one off so that there is still room to manoeuvre the glazing into place, especially for the doors. Once glazed ill add the remaining partitions.

Hi all - on the workbench today is a class 33/0 I've been building for the last couple of weeks . Its pretty plain sailing as the 33 kits go together quickly and easily. The ragged' areas of the orange cantrail line will vanish when the etched cantrail mesh is stuck over the top. 33050 has to be researched carefully as theres been many variations in the locos appearance while it was in construction livery. Things like data panels, number sizes and even the color of the shedplates on the cabfronts changed, plus for a while the loco ran with the upper bodysides painted the wrong color.. Today I'm puttings transfers on it , but couldnt resist dry fitting the plates for a quick photo..

Good afternoon
Back on 33050 now - Bufferbeam bits are next to add - I've already added the ETH fittings, and added some brass wire to represent the cabling that runs to them - it does stand out on the real locos especially being painted bright orange. while the brass wire is out , there's extra pipework to add to the centres of the bogie sideframes , that is related to the brakes I believe, and of course the smaller pipes that run to the brake cylinders.
On the roof I've painted one of the translucent fibreglass panels to show a representation of the framework beneath it - these vary in how visible they are from loco to loco, and of course it also depends how much dirt is on there too. As this loco is being modeled later on in its life , its lost its air horn covers . I had to make the housing for the air horns about 3mm deeper/longer in order to make it the correct dimensions and therefore be able to squeeze the horn castings in there. The etched cantrail grilles have been fitted and later I'll give them a coat of executive dark grey around the edges to blend in with the roof a little more. At the moment the windscreen glazing bits are in the paintshop in order to add the heating elements. Next job will be to start cleaning up all those cast brass handrails , prime them , then fit to the model and add the final color.DSCF1081.JPG DSCF1082.JPG DSCF1083.JPG

Hi Jon!

I'm really liking your 33 - almost tempting me to try 7mm! I think the shape of the crompton looks about spot on.

cheers

Thanks all for looking!
Nice to see you on here Will - if you've hacked and detailed up locos in 4mm scale then you'd have no trouble building a 33 kit, or any of the other jltrt Diesels for that matter . Id say the 50 kit is a good one to try first , as its quite simple for its size. The 33 has a lot more parts that need adding to the bodyshell, mainly roof details , but even then , its nothing complicated.

In Its current state , the 33 kit always looks a bit weird without anything behind the central winscreens -
The headcode blinds that fit behind this are part of the cab/driving desk casting , that fits nicely into the bodyshell,
A quick dry fit to show how it looks with the headcode thingy in place. I wanted a 'red' blind displayed (shunt headcode) as they always faded to a slight orangey pink sort of color rather than pure red - a simple little feature to add to the model.
You can see again in this shot, I had to trim the flare off the longer air horn to make it fit, even with the horn box made deeper . There is of course still an etched grille to fit in front of the horns, that should hide everything nicely :)

Hi Jon

Thanks - I think I'll stick to amiring your 7mm efforts :)

I fear getting the 7mm bug while I have a few too many 4mm projects on the go!!

Im looking forward to seeing your finished 33 and following this thread :)

Cheers
Will

P.s. the 50 grilles you sent me are great. All primed and ready for a top coat to go into 004 and 007 - many thanks again

Morning,
I've been busy with the 33 and its nice to see it all coming together and looking almost finished now. Once its been varnished then the wipers , cabs , windscreens and a few other last little bits can go on. Something wasn't looking quite right with the bufferbeams, or the face of the loco - it turns out simply the bufferheads were too big. The kit comes with 2 sets of buffer heads, cast brass ones and also turned steel - both are the right diameter for a 33/1 but a 33/0 has smaller buffers - no big deal - just popped the steel ones in the lathe and turned them down to 10.8mm

another quick snap of the roof. I haven't forgotten the 'TML' (Trans Marche Link) plates that sit above the names - They'll be fitted next!
The forum admin have kindly let me add a link to my website in my signature - I make models for a living but as I'm sure some will know its hard work and so I've only recently had time to put everything together online and get my web presence sorted!

Time for breakfast!

Thanks will - theres some trademark '33' weathering that ive made a point of including - the odd dent and white marks on the roof where some stray aggregate or something from a loader has landed on it , plus the bright rust that they all seemed to get between the roof panel and the cooling fan (something coolant related perhaps) and the streaks running from the roof vents. Before fitting the etched radiator grilles i went over the inner framework on the bodyshell with some powders and a fibreglass brush just so the detail and relief would stand out once the grilles were fitted over the top .
The weathering is a mix of allsorts , dry brushing, tinted varnish , very thin enamel and powders worked into wet paintwork - nice for textured rust.
