Prototype BR M.1 BSO(T) 9003

Photos of one small part of a BSO(T) on a preserved railway. The service train was made up as TSO / TSO / BSO(T) / RMB / TSO with the on-train catering of tea, coffee, home made cake (blueberry and lemon drizzle cake), chocolate and crisp, in the RMB - maybe the BSO(T) is the only serviceable brake coach, seems odd to have two buffet areas in the same set.

Bob, WT's very own BR Mk.1 supremo (@Bob-65B), may be able to tell us more about the conversion and possibly identify the carriage.

Not sure how the buffet staff was to get behind the counter unless the entrance is via the toilet compartment and the visible cupboard. As for the colour of the walls - was this original?

I don't know the number of this particular vehicle but the timing of your pictures couldn't be better! I have just started folding the tables up and painting the seats for the interior of my EasyBuild BSO(t) and was looking for some decent shots.

My model is of Sc9003 but I would hazard a guess that this is not the one in your pictures.

Cheers.

For Sean (@The Penguin Of Doom), here is a photo which got left out of the original post:-

BSO(T)-I.jpg

Note the clips to which is attached the board at the back of the buffet area. If you look at the second picture in the original post you can see that the board is not full height... time to let a little more light into your buffet?

And some more detail to consider, the roof vents and water pipes of the BSO(T). The water filler seems to be off-centre here:-

Graham -

They are off-centre on many types with one lav. at a coach end [as opposed to SKs/SOs etc.] This is exactly the roof layout on our BSO/BSO[T] kit.

I think you'll find there's only one lavatory, the other was converted to a store room for the buffet which also gave access to the counter.

BSO started with a single lavatory and that was at the same end as the buffet counter - now taken out of service (padlock fitted and hence why I could not determine if there is a link between toilet compartment and buffet cupboard).

possibly identify the carriage

You did actually leave a FBC in your first photos

So it wasn't too difficult to find

which potentially answers one of your questions.

As that reckons they have a BCK - stored and awaiting repair and a BSK stored and undergoing mods for disabled access.

I believe some of these mk 1 micro buffet conversion were done at Darnall (Sheffield).

Originally intended to provide buffet car facilities on far north line trains, without having to provide a full buffet car.

Uurrgh!

I'm hoping that the blue colour scheme inside is from the preservation era, but, having read about another BSO(t) with a yellow colour scheme in BR days, I'm thinking that my model of Sc9003 (picked since it is my favourite Deltic), may have to suffer the same shade.....

When I built the kit, I could find little in the way of photographs of the prototype and so I blanked the windows out as per the only picture I could find (which ISTR was the much thumbed through Mk1 book we all know so well). I am not in posession of the coach or book at the moment so I can't confirm but what I am certain of is that the opaque windows I have added are pretty robustly fitted and are unlikely to be removed without causing damage to the coach itself so a little bit of modellers licence will have to be employed.

The interior pictures are just the stuff for me though and I will be using them as my reference. I'll have to be quick though, this time next week our clubs work in progress - Invermire - will need a finished rake of stock including my BSO(t) when it appears at the Hull MRS open day (shameless plug! ).

Thanks again for posting the pictures.

Cheers.

Sean.
