Prototype BR Pipe Wagon

Chris and I paid another visit to the Stainmore Railway at Kirkby Stephen last Saturday. We were very fortunate in that it was members day and they had put lunch on. Being the kind people that they are, Mike and Sue invited us to have lunch as soon as we arrived.

Following lunch we were able to have a brake van ride in the Ex GCR 6 Wheeled Brake van and a guided tour showing what has been done to date and what is planned next.

What was really useful is that the Pipe wagon which has bee stored up the line and in accessible had been moved down into the station area ready for starting work on it. Last time we visited I had a lengthy chat with a gent called Rob who is one of the owners of it. With it being accessible I thought it worth while to get some photos of it just incase I need to build one at some point.

Ironically (having just recently built one) I am sure that this is a BR Build but it has LNER Axle boxes.

There's an awful lot of timber required for the refurb..

There is, it's pretty tired.

The guy Rob, that I referred to is well on with restoring a NER 6 wheeled brake coach (which sadly is sat on a BR 4wheeled chassis until such time as he can find a suitable 6 wheeled chassis for it) so it's in good hands I reckon. The same guy is also managing the restoration of the Ex Beamish NER tool van that I posted pictures of a while back. He's pointed me at the drawing numbers for the NRM so a model of one is on the cards at some point.

Rob

Thank you for posting these photos, they are very helpful as I am in the middle of building a Parkside kit for this diagram and was pondering a few thoughts about the brake gear and other bits and pieces. The wagon shown is in the first series of the BR build (diag 1/462) numbered 741100 to 741499 and as the plate says built 1955 (to 1956).

It is interesting that there are no roping cleats on the bottom board which will be found on the LNER/LMS version BR builds. I hadn't been able to find a clear picture of this diagram with or without cleats and I can't see any holes on the bottom board in your photos which might indicate that they did have roping cleats. However the drawing of 1/462 in Illustrated History of BR Wagons vol 1 shows there to be three cleats but we all know that what the drawing shows and what was built doesn't always tally. Therefore I will assume that this series were built without them unless anyone else can tell me categorically that they were fitted when first built as my layout has two running periods 1945 - 1955 and 1956 -1965 I would like to be sure what was fitted when.

I have answered my own point about no roping cleats having had another closer look at the photos. The cleats were replaced by roping hooks placed under the metal frame that surrounds the floor and whereas there were only 3 roping cleats per side there appear to be quite a few more roping hooks on this wagon.

Hi Rob

Did you take any pics of the blue van coupled to / up against the pipe wagon ?

Steve

Hi Steve,

I did albeit some time ago. Unfortunately I suspect that it isn't what you think. Its not a BR blue van it's an LNER 12 ton van painted to represent LNER Engineers Blue Livery

Ooh.

Is this the same one that Parkside do in 7mm? I have one of those to build and these pictures will be most helpful.

Cheers.

Sean.
Yep, the wagon at Stainmore is a diag 1/462 which is the same as Parkside represent with their wagon.
