Book nerds - help! (Peckett Saddle Tanks + GWR 'Dean' Goods)

Hi all,
Looking for some good reference books for two subjects - the GWR 'Dean' Goods locos (a good pictorial with details of rebuilds/variations over time would be excellent - detail photographs and drawings would be very handy!!), and if anyone's seen/has a good omnibus/overall family history of Peckett & Sons' saddle tank locos (if I was focussing my interest specifically - the little outside-cylinder 0-4-0ST's) - again, line/general arrangement drawings/sketches, variations and build lists would be highly regarded. I'm looking to slowly build up a little library of references for a few long-term build projects :)
Regards,
David G.

Not much out there on Peckett, other than some original circa 1912 Works catalogues which come up on Ebay occasionally - most of the content being photos and data for narrow gauge and export locos. Oh, and some nice early works views.

IRS has just published a book comprising Peckett Works photos, by the look of it using the Peckett archives at NRM York. I have a copy on order.

If it is any help I spent a couple of evenings trawling through the drawings archive catalogue and came up with a fairly long list of G.A. and related drawings for 4 and 6 coupled tank locos - I'll dig it up and scan if you wish.

Tony,
I'd appreciate a look at your list if it's possible, please. I'm looking for info on the FA 0-6-0st locos for Avonmouth docks.
Cheers,
Steph

I've had a look at the NRM archives list - extremely difficult to tell what's worthwhile playing by correspondence!! I might just take you up on that at some stage. I'll see if I can lay hands on this book from IRS as a starting point though before going too mad.... just looking to see if I can see some patterns in the key dimensions/configuration of a few models in the family.

The IRS book has literally just arrived - even from the briefest of flip-throughs I'd say this is a definite MUST for you!!:thumbs:

Both in stock etc.

Martyn Bane's site is very good, definitely worth a look.

Ooo'er.... that website is exactly what I'd hoped to find (not for lack of goobling.... but sometimes it just doesn't quite get into the right cracks and crevices!!). Thanks heaps for that lead! I'd actually seen one sub-page of the larger site in a search the other evening - but hadn't dug in to find the root/home page and all the other bits-and-pieces on there!

I didn't quite put 2+2 together that Titfield was your endeavour Simon, I'll be sure to divert my funds there when I have acquired them! Both look to be just what I need to form a bit of a backbone of knowledge....

I have read the Dean - man and engine - book and the content is most useful to anyone wishing to model the Dean Goods. The only other source of relevant information that is known to me is the appropriate part of the RCTS "Locos of the GWR". OK - most of this tome has been out of print for at least thirty years, some parts can be found through specialist book sellers - Nigel Bird comes to mind as one who tries to keep copies of the fourteen parts.

No worries, I don't like to bang on about it too much as I'm really only here for the trains:p

OK here is the list I made from the NRM Archive index. I have only pulled out General Arrangement and Side / End Elevation drawings. I cannot guarantee I've found them all!

If anyone can match locomotives / working locations / works numbers to any of the drawings which do not specify the info, that would be very helpful.

Edit: I have left off drawings labelled as narrow gauge - the list is standard gauge only.

I think it'd be a bit like the metaphorical minefield to try and specifically say "xyz loco conforms to this diagram" for the simple fact that as-built diagrams may vary wildly to either factory or (more-likely) non-factory modifications, repairs, upgrades........
