Young Michael brought the G5 to show me this morning. He is makeing a fine job, I look forward to seeing the completed model. A reminder of my childhood in my late father's signalbox close on sixty years ago.
Apart from the earlier mentioned J73, Michael and I are also planning a A7 a piece. If nothing else, a good excuse for a day in York, the NRM a good pub dinner and a pint or two. Mick

"I also made the front windows opening,"

He's definitely of the West Mersea mob now...!

I'll have to make mine opening now though of course  :)) Looking excellent mate, keep it up and we'll have two G5's in no time at all!! :thumbs:

Are you planning on having working inside motion on this one?

JB.

Fred, if you want to see more, look on the G5 website. Up north a "New Build" is under construction. Who knows, when steamed you may get chance "To Hold the Handle". Best Wishes, Mick.

Col,

I did look at the catch as i've got a drawing and some good pictures but gave it up as a ' too hard to do '  :headbang: As for the glazing I was hoping you and JB would point me in the right direction with that ??

JB,

I only try to follow where you and Col lead  :)) I was hoping to fit inside valve gear by means of some kind of chain drive squeezed onto the crank axle and the motor and gear box driven towards the cab some where from a hidden dummy axle. Definately a trail and error job  :scratch: :scratch: If the finished article turns out half as good as yours and Col's i'll be happy  :)) :))

" As for the glazing I was hoping you and JB would point me in the right direction with that ??"

Mick, One idea I have discussed was to use 10thou glass, which Peter has in stock I believe, sandwiched between to thin etched frames.

"I only try to follow where you and Col lead"
Don't do that you'll only go grey and bald  :)) :)) :))

" I was hoping to fit inside valve gear by means of some kind of chain drive squeezed onto the crank axle and the motor and gear box driven towards the cab some where from a hidden dummy axle."

Plans are afoot JB and I have worked out an idea for this one, but it needs proving first  :headbang: :thumbs:

Col,

Well I'm half way there, the wife is forever telling me i'm going grey, I tell her it's her fault  :)) :)) I like the sound of the 10thou glass, the front windows are two etches and the outer is larger than the inner so the glass could sit nicely inside  :scratch: I also have spares from the kit so I can use them on the J73  ;D

More G5 progess, since my last post I have put together the smoke box, front splashers and the boiler which when you say it like that it doesn't seem like a lot of work but let me tell you it was  :headbang: :headbang: Here are the component parts

[attachimg=1]

Trying to keep up with the West Mersea lads is hard graft  :)) I've managed to half inch a couple of tube plates from JB, one for the G5 and the other for the J73. So I fitted that which was straight forward but then it took forever to cut out the smoke box front and rear and i've discovered i need a lot more practice at cutting circles  :headbang: :headbang: Anyway that done the only other thing I altered was cutting out for the chimney so the sound can carry up it the correct way and not out from the bunker and burnished the rivets with a brass bush the round the heads off. Thanks for that tip JB, it makes etched rivets look so much better IMHO. This front on shot finds out the dodgy circle cutting so I may need to see my mate and turn up a very thin shim washer and fit that as a jointing ring to the smoke box door ??

[attachimg=2]

I also fitted backs to the front splashers as JB has on his G5, what he didn't do is warn of how hard this would be. I needed about five hands for this job and careful use of heat sinks, that said the lot pinged apart more then once  :headbang: :)) I also made up the buffer beams, which are the sandwich type, using brass plate to represent the timber packing. I've tried to represent the timber spliting on the front one as photographs show but we'll see on painting how sucessful this is  :scratch: I've not cut out for the buffers and the rear plate is left plain as I intend to use self contained buffers to prevent the nut from being seen at the rear. The engine so far

[attachimg=3]

All the brass castings i've fitted so far are from Laurie Griffin and are,

Chimney, Dome, tank fillers, sand box lids and lamp irons,

Hi Mick,
Very nice clean work. As you said , its not easy to get work as neat as that. I tend to make as much as possible from fold ups to avoid too much soldering though I still make splashers from a front and top soldered together. Nickel silver can be quite a tough material sometimes to bend. I was talking to a modeller the other day who was building an all n/s kit and was finding it very difficult to do.
The boiler mountings are very nice and it all looks very good.
Looking forward to seeing some more.

Hi Mick, that's looking the business.  :bowdown: :bowdown:  :thumbs: :thumbs:

Between you and Jonathan, you may have me straying down the smokebox details route at some point :scratch:

If it's any help when I am cutting circles, I cut under size and then use one of the cheap drum sanders that you get in pound type shops for mini drills. The ones I have are quite coarse and soon open it up while make it easier to keep it circular.

"but then it took forever to cut out the smoke box front and rear"
Mick, If there is a small hole in the smoke box plates, as there usually is in etched kits, what I have done sometimes is to find a long bolt that fits this tightly, put this through with a washer either side and tighten with a nut, then if you have access to a lathe, mount in the chuck and carfully turn the dia. of whole you require on the face. I say gently because the first time I tried it I mullerd it (Essex boy's term for buggered). :headbang: It may pay just to cut through half the metal thickness then finish by hand. But you end up with a tidy hole.
Delicate work but it works.

Excellent work Mick. :thumbs:

Nice work on the G5 Mick and well worth fitting backs to the splashers.  :thumbs:

I can see that when I get around to doing my "Castle" again, I'll get a lot of stick on here if I don't fit a tubeplate and all the other gubbins inside the smokebox.  ;)
