I can see that when I get around to doing my "Castle" again, I'll get a lot of stick on here if I don't fit a tubeplate and all the other gubbins inside the smokebox.  ;)

Smokebox tubeplates are so last year...  what you ought to consider is a working vacuum pump with the "tinkle-tinkle" of the drop valves as Cadbury poooodddles around.

Hi Mick..

Absolutely spectacular mate... Really...!!  :thumbs:

Lovely work, and a beautiful job on the cab windows. I must admit, I was going to give these a miss on this engine, but I'll need to have them working now ya' bugger !!  :)) I really like those water filler lids, might have to get some from LG next weekend..

Not sure if you have the wheels for the G5 yet, but you'll need to trim back the aperture for the driving wheels in the footplate before you attach the lead driving wheel splashers, as the kit was designed for 0FS..

Keep it up...  :thumbs: :thumbs:

JB.

P.s. Did you put the washout plugs in the tubeplate ??  :)) :))

Mike, Graham and Dan,

Thanks for your positive comments chaps, i'll try and keep up the good work  :thumbs: :thumbs:

Rob and Col,

Thanks for the tip about the smoke box, I think i'll try turning the J73 smoke box on a laith as you suggest Col. Only because I have ready access to one and it should return a much finer finish, i'm kicking myself I didn't do this for the G5 but the learning curve is steep at the minute  :headbang: :)) :))

JB,

Thanks very much mate, I must be on the right track if Col and yourself think i'm doing alright  :thumbs: :thumbs:

The water fillers are much finer than the white metal ones in the kit, I too am a big fan of LG and luckily he produces a J24 kit, which is very similar to a G5, J73 and others so there are quite a lot of castings avaliable. On that note could you let me know the LG reference for the inside valve gear, I've read its Stephenson's with slide valves. I will have to email him a shopping list soon. I don't have any wheelsets and am about up to the point where i'm stuck without making a start on the frames and I was going to leave that until I spoke to the west Mersea lads in April as these will be my first S7 frames  :eek: Thanks for the tip about the splashers, can you post a picture of yours so I know how much to remove please ?

I haven't put the washout plugs in yet but I soon will  :shit: :)) In addition i'm off to the NRM this week with the family and intend to pop up and get some photos of the drawing for the G5 blast pipe arrangement which should show all the internal gubbings of the smoke box, that should keep us right  :thumbs:

Yup, Stephensons with single slide bar, I think I put pictures of the kit
on my loco workbench.. Seems ages since I posted there last....!!

Just need to remove enough of the footplate so that the hole under the splashers is flush to the outside face, don't need much lateral movement in the drivers as all the sideplay will be in the bogie.. Frames can be nice and wide... 30.5mm overall on the L1 at the moment, and the G5 should be fine with that..

Ok so i'm sorry to say i've been pulled away from the G5 at the moment, but only for a moment hopefully  :)). I was rooting around in my Dad's loft the other day and came accross lots of 7mm etchings and what look like some part built loco's. When i asked about them he said they used to belong to George Norton, those of you who knew George or not as the case may be will be aware that he was a fantastic railway modeller and has his own range of etched brass kits, which for the time and even now are still fantastic. Anyway I had a good dig through the bits and amongst other things found an almost complete kit of a Lancashire and Yorkshire Class 31 0-8-0 heavy goods engine ( no it's not like the blue ones with yellow ends  :)) :))) I was more than excited about the find and the fact that I would feel very honoured to build a George Norton kit as i remember him with fondness and how he used to walk past the layout at shows and say ' Carry On ' in a very military fashion. A Good friend to the family and sadly missed in the model railway world.

Below is the kit. The brass was very tarnsihed after years sat about, probably about twenty as the copyright to George on the etching says 1991.

This picture shows the double tender springs which were a unique feature of these eight wheeled Lanky tenders.

[attachimg=2]

I initially said to myself that I would gather the parts I needed and research the kit properly before I started. So after a few emails to Dikitriki for help and five minutes of pondering I started cutting out parts for the tender  :headbang: :headbang: :)) New kit fever  :)) The parts cleaned up really well;

[attachimg=3]

I set about putting the tender together, which was a bit of a struggle without instructions. However I looked at a few photos and all became clear. The main body is all slot and tab, the tabs being handed so things can't be fitted the wrong way  :thumbs:

[attachimg=4]

[attachimg=5]

And here's the tender so far, reasonabley straight forward, although the tender flare was great fun  :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :))

Best regards Mick

Michael, as always a nice piece of work. The tileing you have done for Laura also looks good.
I have put together a 7mm scale outline drawing of the J73, so something else for you to be getting on with. Best Wishes, Mick.

Oh dear, you've fallen into the trap of having more than one engine on the go  :))

Looks lovely though..

A very lucky find indeed, i can't believe my Dad's had it sitting there for years and I hadn't found it before. Fingers crossed there's more goodies to be had, i'm sure there is a LYR Class 23 tank aswell but first things first  :)).

I'll hopefully be at WM this Sunday though I need to work around the fact that it is easter sunday..

Yesterday was a slight anti-climax, as the test track didn't turn up  :headbang:

But the sprung Gresley bogies went down a treat.. Almost had an orderly queue of people trying to buy them off me  :))

Hi Mick

That tender is off to a great start, clean and square. It seems very much a lengthened version of the 6 wheel tender I'm doing for the Aspinall A, almost as long as the loco.

I shall watch this with interest, as one of these is on my wanted list in due course.

Keep up the good work.

No worries at all mate, glad to see the boggies turned out very well  :thumbs: :thumbs: Shame the test track didn't turn up, it would have been nice to watch a video of the twin art set running around. Still looking forward to seeing the coaches on Sunday though  :thumbs:

Thanks Richard,

What kit is the Aspinall A ?? I'm just wondering about a source for tender castings, also i'll add to the wish list as one of my favourate photo's of Goole is one of these engines propelling a minerall train through the station into a siding under the NE footbridge.

Hi Mick

It's the Chowbent one, now disappeared into the bowels of JLTRT. A lovely kit, perhaps a bit basic, but you can build a very nice model from it.
I aim to take some photos shortly when I can drag myself away from building!

You don't need many castings for the tender.
You've got the axlebox/springs.
The brakes will be the double hanger type and presumably etched, as will the 'dome' cover on the tender top.
Scoop from JLTRT from the crab kit (useless for a crab but pretty good for L&Y!). Having said that, I haven't yet been able to ascertain for certain that they were fitted with a scoop.
Buffers from JLTRT L&Y saddle tank. This assumes JLTRT will play ball. You might try Andrew from Lanky models, the 31 is a current kit I believe.
Lamp irons and brake spreaders from Griffin.
and the rest is scratchbuilding.

Cheers

Richard

Sorry I'm not that au fait with the L&Y, I think I know which are the A-class Aspinal's as I believe they rivalled the Midland 4-4-0's for elegance. Are they the class 3's built in 1891-94 - according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locomotives_of_the_Lancashire_and_Yorkshire_Railway#John_Audley_Frederick_Aspinall_.281886-1899.29?

If so then they get a mention in F.C. Hambleton's book - "Locomotives worth modelling". I picked up a copy because it had lots of drawings in it. Anyway for the L&YR Aspinal 1891 4-4-0's it has a couple of nice drawings for the loco No.1093 and the joy valve gear. Unfortunately the one drawing for the tender doesn't really show any scoop detail but he does say it was quite small and
... only 1800 gallons of water. Still, what did that matter, seeing that it was fitted with a water scoop? - and a water scoop lowered and lifted by a vacuum cylinder and gear. Had Aspinall once upon a time personally struggled with the pull rod of a L.N.W water-scoop? - and then vowed that his firemen, at least, should never have to indulge in such wrestling matches?
I hope that helps.

Adrian
