Hi All I am not sure who is the moderator for this forum but if he/she/it would give me the go ahead I will try to do a series of posts but my time is pretty limited. I will start with the first chapter now, NOTE there are no pictures yet, so those who can't read are going to be in big trouble.
Are you sitting comfortably, Once upon a time in the dim and distant past there were hardly any accurate
4mm models and even fewer 7mm, either kit or RTR. A young modeller decided he had had enough of card kits and kit bashing Airfix wagons with card, plasticard, milk bottle tops ( Strapping) and assorted generalised buffers
brakegear, axleboxes etc. Having bought a casting machine, ostensibly to produce 4mm tram kits, a number
of other equally stupid modellers decided to have a go at making models and he got involved in doing castings
for them. This developed well and they persuaded him to make patterns as well, which made things go even
better. He now found that besides working full time developing ways to make bits for Concorde he was also
doing another 40 hours a week casting, pattern making and packing for the business he had registered as
a.b.s. models. in 1970
This became a problem as his boss was getting fed up with him being absent every Monday, taking odd
days of leave and he had run out of leave as well. A decision had to be made, abandon his model customers
such as Mopok, George and Allan, CJL models. GS models and Auto replicas to their fate, knowing that
there were no other casters who would do subcontract casting because the old system of " if you want
castings you give us the patterns and we will sell the models" was not a satifactory option fot them.
Thus at Xmas 1971 he took the risky option of swapping a GOOD JOB for the very uncertain position
as SELF EMPLOYED model maker. Thus the saga begins ----------
The next chapter will depend on the moderator Adrian

You see, that's the real problem nowadays - nobody wants to serve an apprenticeship, they'd rather jump straight on the footlplate and shovel coal or operate the regulator :D And so the old traditional skills end falling by the wayside (or in the 4 ft).

This is going to get confusing - I might have to change my name or use my surname more often!

I've split off these few posts from the Dapol Wagon thread as they are heading off in another direction, a more constructive direction I hope.

As to the "moderators" you can see from the front forum page the box "Staff Online Now" will show you who is currently present and as you may surmise from this, those in the "Flying Squad" constitute the "moderators".

Finally I didn't put much thought into the title for the thread but feel free to change it to something more suitable.

Excellent!

Despite knowing you as that suave chap with the smart jacket and scarf that one sometimes sees at shows, I am currently having to keep fighting images of Max Bygraves away - " I wanna tell you a story...."

And why not:))

I've lost count of how many times I've pressed the 'Like' button. I'm going to need some popcorn. Well done Adrian!

Hi Osgood, Please take that horrible pipe out of my mouth and add the scarf. As they say "Ne're cast a clout till
may be out" The parting is on the wrong side and the hair is receding far too much. Best keep my mouth shut
though to hide the missing teeth. Prefer not to upload genuine photo, there may just be a nymphomaniac
millionairess model railway enthusiat out there and I would not like her to be put off too quickly!!

Pleased to see some reaction to the forum, when the hits reach the million mark I will know I am almost
famous. Looks like I may have to continue this, should have kept my mouth completely shut.

Congratulations Adrian. I never thought this day might come to pass! This will be entertaining indeed!!!

Makes me think I'll have to start one of these myself - trouble is that unlike an upstanding citizen such as Mr. Swain, I'd have to be continually be editing out the sex, drugs & rock-n-roll bits.

I look forward to instalment No.2!

Hello Adrian,

Episode 1 was good and as a bonus I can't cock-up the Sky Plus dooby doo missing your next installment (chair pulled up, leant forward and avidly waiting for the next bit...)
