A trio of Southern Opens

Some time ago a friend from the EAG (G1) sold me three of Tony Riley's 5 plank opens. The price was good so I thought at least they would increase my meagre GWR mixed freight wagons.

After some research from The Southern modellers in KLOGG group I see every Tuesday I now have details and drawings. There are two D1304 (SR) and one D1364 (SR)

The first of the photos are the two D1304's with the bodies assembled.

Next up is the D1364

This vehicle is 15' 6" over headstocks and 7' 9" over the body width, so this wagon is 6" longer and 4" wider that the two D1304s. So I decided to build this one first.
The corner plates and the cross strapping are made of lead. (comes with a health warning).

End view showing the Slater's buffers, I bought the buffers and the brakegear for all three wagons from Slater's. Also the knee straps are also made from lead.

I got called away for afternoon tea and cake, so I couldn't refuse could I. So to continue.

This what you get with just a body only kit, so I thought I would add the underneath timbers.

These were all cut from hardwood and are only placed in position just to make sure everything fits.
The W Irons are from Ken Martin and have been cut down and the length so as to get the 9' wb in the correct place.

The actual vehicle's wb was 9' 3" but as I have bought Stater's 9' 1/32 brakegear I didn't wont any fitting issues.
I shall also be using KM's axle boxes with his drawgear.

I'm currently cutting out the cross diagonals, these go from the edge of the buffers up into the nearest cross member. I not sure about the dimensions but it looks better than not having none at all.

Hi all

Update on the first of the three SR open wagons discussed above.

All the brake gear has now been fitted, I've chemically treated (BC) the Axleboxes and their keeper plates plus the Buffer heads.
After a good tip from Ken Martin I've put some small pieces of Evergreen rod down each axle hole, this reduces the travel between the WIrons.

This rod is 2.5mm and you get five pieces in a pack. It will last for years.

The wagon is now in the airing cupboard after a first coat of paint on the chassis. Photographs will follow after two coat of undercoat all over.

Although I haven't shown a photo of the underneath I've connected the two draw hook together via a spring in the centre slot. (see previous photos)

The transfers are from Tenmille Product 1 wasn't impressed, the instructions suggest putting them in water for two minutes! I did mine for one minute and then they starting to float off the backing paper. The one thing they are is robust it took a lot of effort to get then into the correct place.

That just leaves two to do. But I need the Toad brake van first.

Perhaps you are leaving them in the water for too long. I suggest two minutes might be better since 2 minuets would typically take 4 - 8 minutes!

Hi Dave
I thought at the time it didn't look right but there is always someone who will enlighten you. I have amended them now.
