BR Std 4MT tank - recommended research materials

Speaking to Dave Sharp of MOK yesterday and I seem to have ordered a BR Std 4MT tank.

Now I need to get some reference material together, any suggestions for reading material would be most welcome.

The first item on my list is RCTS, BR Standard Steam Locomotives, Vol3 The Tank Engine Classes.

I am looking for further recommendations.

Regards

Dave

The S7 Group has wheels and crank pins for this class in their Stores - made by Slaters and with a finer profile to the tyre than the standard Slaters range. Whilst the wheels from the S7 Group are supplied with a S7 axle the axles are interchangeable with the standard 0FS axle. Contact @pcalkel for details.

Enjoy it - it's a fantastic kit.

The RCTS book does contain a lot of details but more in text than images. So it does have a lot of information on the variations - as usual although it was notionally a "standard" loco there were an awful lot of variations between them, I've summarised a few of the visible differences mentioned in the RCTS book but I'm sure there are a lot more.

As for other reference books then I haven't really found anything else suitable - most of it has been on-line. There are a couple of galleries on RMWeb which I have used for detail shots

Other than that I would say choose an individual loco out of the fleet and trawl the online photo repositories for as many photo's as you can on that specific loco. My first port of call is usually Transport Treasury - they list the photo's including loco numbers so the search may well give you a couple of good photo's to start with.

Otherwise any questions then please ask.

Adrian,

you mention the Transport Treasury as a good place to look for loco photos, so I popped in a loco number and yes they list the loco but how do you preview the photo, or do you just have to buy it on trust?

From the website you can't preview the photo - you do have to buy on trust. That said though I've never had a bad photo yet from them and their descriptions are pretty accurate. If you have a query then you can always email them.

What I usually do is order a selection in the smaller size, a 6x4 is only £1.25, which given the cost of the rest of the loco is a drop in the ocean, especially for a man of your means. The photo's are top quality prints - not some cheap inkjet print from a cheap scanner and if there are a couple of cracking photo's then I will re-order as 10x8 prints which again at £4 I don't think is too bad.

For my means please read skint!!!

It's just that I've never had a photo from them and I do like to see them first (normally). But on your recommendation I'll give them a try.

Paul,

As said by Adrian, the service and quality from Transport Treasury is very good and I can recommend them as well.

I had the opportunity of getting some detail shots of the NYMR 4MT as it was being disassembled for overhaul.

That's a link that hopefully takes you the album on my Flickr stream. If it proves useful I may be able to dig out the original shots and make a prototype gallery on WT. don't hold me to that, though. I doubt I could remember which disk the originals are on!

Dave just let know what your looking for We have rebuilt a couple of these so I do have lots of pics with them in bit on the floor. The one thing to watch for and I've not seen it done yet! is the shape of the bottom of the tank. This may help.

Thanks everyone for your help & ideas. I am surprised by how little printed material covers this BR Std Class.

Recently back from a week in North West Scotland, the reason I couldn't get to Guildex.

I needed some reading material whilst on holiday so took these:
HolidayReadingMaterial.jpg

which I recently got received from @Simon (thanks Simon, excellent service).

So being at step closer.

I met up with Dave Sharp yesterday & got this:

So now I am set for for the long dark nights.

I should setup a build thread, I hope I can do Dave's kit justice.

Judging by the amount of castings, this one is going to run for quite some time.

I'm sure it will - although you'll still probably finish before me - I keep getting side tracked with other projects.

I've just been updating my website and have put up some of my build, http://www.cherryclan.com/category/7mm/locos/standard-4mt/

There's more progress to report but I have been concentrating on the 2mmFS stuff at the moment - but will get round to a few more updates soon.
