Brush Type 4 / Class 47 wheels from S7 Group

The release of the JLTRT kit for the Class 47 is with us and the Scaleseven Group is delighted to announce that Slater's Plastikard has provided the S7 Group with samples of the S7 wheel for this prototype. Here are some photos of the sample on my folding table:-

The wheel has a tyre with a S7 profile... and a brass insert for a Slater's S7 3/16" OD axle (the JLTRT kit has 3/16" ID bushes for the bogies). The front face and rear face to the wheel disk are dished as per the prototype... with four 2.5" holes at 30" PCD.

These wheels are available via the S7 Group Stores, c/o Paul Stokes who is a member of WT. If S7 members wish to order a set of wheels for the JLTRT kit then please order via Paul Stokes.

Graham,

It's nice to see both scale diesel wheels being produced and Slater's producing a further wheel that can be viewed from both sides.

I hope there are finescale versions available for the masses too...

If you are a S7 member then order the wheels and (subsequently) either:-

* ask David to swap S7 axles for FS at Telford etc..

or:-

* arrange to swap the S7 axles for FS axles with S7 modellers who have bought Slater's FS wheels and hence have spare narrow gauge axles!

How many loco sets do you want?

They look very nice Graham so now I'll show my total ignorance of such things and ask on behalf of others equally ignorant 'are these wheels suitable for any other type of UK locomotive without modification?'

The 3'9" diameter over tread of the BT4 is common with some other diesel designs, for example:-

* classes 24, 25, 35, 40, 45, 46, 47 & 56 (information from Slater's catalogue).

At this point neither I nor the S7 Group are expressing any view about the suitability of the Class 47 S7 wheel for other locos as there has been no checks / investigations in line with your question.

In passing... the "accepted wisdom" of diesel wheels is that if there are holes in the wheel disk then there are four holes... and so thought I until recently. Mick (@mickoo) has a photograph of a Class 37 (?) bogie abandoned at Landore and at least one wheel shows eight (?) holes arranged equidistantly around the wheel disk!

Classes 24/25 have a lot more than four holes as well. On these locos the wheels look like they're hollow castings, so suspect the holes are there in part to support the core(s).

Class 24/25s have 16 holes 11/2 inches in diameter spaced equally around the outside of the wheel face to lighten the wheel.

Perhaps, just for the record, you could get a photo of the rear of the wheel!!!

Rob
Did you mean back of the real thing? I must admit that might be a struggle without it being on the pit, what with big traction motors in the way, but I'll give it a go..

JB.

Aah, right - got my head screwed on now

JB, you should be able to do it from the front - the back of the wheel is pretty exposed on one side. The other side less so because of the gearbox. Alternatively:

Although that's from Kestrel, I think the wheels should be the same.

These look nice Graham.

Are these available to S7 group members only or general public as well?

Cheers
