Building a SAR NG-G13 in 1/13.3scale

I was surprized that today, I got plansets in pdf format for a NG-G13 and a NG-G16 via a Dropbox on internet.
The last days where spent to research the internet for it.
And BANG! today it was like birthday and Xmas on the same day.

Having only built model boats I may have to learn how to build such a big locomotive. Maybe I start with a wooden mock-up to see if everything fits together. Done that a lot of time when building my boats.

Total wheelbase is 98cms.

Hope I can tackle this project.

Here page 127 of the NG-G13 pdf file.

You could of course just have bought them https://sarsteam.co.za/SAR-2ft-NG-Locomotives-c46570236  As well as any other SAR steam engine that interests.

Considering what the NRM charges, I don't think these prices are too bad for full sets of engine drawings including tenders.

I'm a big fan of the 2' Garratts and 1:13 will be a big model, look forward to seeing progress

Thanks a lot for the link it will be most useful for future projects.
It will be very big but making it live steam is beyond my possibilities.

I may build it in wood first... I have a lot of experience with wood. Look at this picture I took in a museum nearby here in Switzerland.

This wooden Mason Boogie locomotive runs on 80mm wooden track. It has a batterie in the boiler and the motor and gearbox sit in the tender. Its remote controlled and runs just fantastic.

Then I could start building a live steam model....but I wont be able to build the boiler....

...and then there is the Balson AG (Balson AG) some 20 miles away....look at the video...1/3 scale, 4 tons...must have cost a fortune for the owner...

We'll see what can be done....

Great project! I’m building an r/c NGG16 in 1/19 scale. The build has been stalled by a house move, but it’ll be back on the workbench soon. The prototype is NGG 131, chosen because of the fabulous detailed photographs available here Narrow Gauge Garratt NGG16-131 Locomotive Photos for Model Train Builders . The Loco is operational, seen working here on my old line with K1....

But there’s lots of work still to do on the boiler unit......

Looking forward to following your build.

It’s 32mm gauge track - because of the limited market, most commercial models in this scale are designed to accommodate both 32mm and 45mm gauge wheels, which can make them even fatter than the notorious 4mm scale Heljan ‘tubby duff’ Class 47. Including, sadly, this otherwise gorgeous live steam NGG16:

When it’s side-by-side with my scale width battery electric version, it’s very clear just how
much elastic (from memory it’s around 10mm) has had to be added to the width in order to accommodate the 45mm gauge wheels.
