7mm Dan's S7 Workbench - Buffer Stops

It's funny how a single picture can inspire you and so it was when Chris Tooth posted this image of a buffer stop on his "Pencarrow" layout building thread....

(Hope you don't mind Chris?).

Built from the excellent Ragstone kit, it reminded me that I'd built a GWR version from the same stable ages ago....

After constructing it, I'd sprayed it with primer, but it had languished on a shelf ever since.

A couple of evenings ago, I was conducting experiments (successful, but can't say more at present!), to represent a weathered concrete finish on some structures I'd made. I was using these Daler Rowney Artist's Oil Pastels....

I was impressed at how easy it was to blend colours together using white spirit. They can be reactivated again if necessary though, so will need spraying with varnish to seal them!

Anyway, whilst waiting for various parts of the concrete experiment to dry, I thought I'd try out the pastels on my buffer stop and although not yet finished, I think the results are pretty encouraging....

Interested to hear how you get on with sealing it in Dan, I was under the impression that oil pastels were a combination of pigment and wax so the latter would make applying varnish a bit of an issue.

Can't fault the colour you achieved though, the sleepers look really good :)

Thanks Steve.

My wife bought them for me a couple of years ago and until I opened the packet, I assumed they were chalky pastels and didn't know there was any other kind! However, having painted and stripped my structures three times already in my quest to "nail" weathered concrete, I felt I had nothing to lose!

If, as you say, the pastels do have wax in them, it's quite possible that everyday handling will not affect them in the slightest. The problem is, I need to add some false shadows to the structures, without reactivating and spoiling the finish I've already achieved - I'm hoping that spraying some Ronseal polyurethane varnish over them will stop that happening. Of course, once they're embedded on a layout, the handling issue largely disappears. I'll experiment on the unfinished buffer stop to see if the pastels object to handling - if not, I certainly won't be varnishing them!

Nice buffer stop, but for me the rotten / damaged sleepers really steal the limelight

What are they made from?

Thanks Osgood. The sleepers are just the C&L ABS plastic jobbies, suitably distressed with a sharp scalpel blade.

Edit: Just found this picture from 2010....
