Dapol announcement at Warley

They look good but, as they say, "the devil is in the detail". The blurb says they are modelling the 'original' condition, so does this mean ignoring the various modifications BR had to do to the doors and windows when the 'rot monster' got to work.

The blue/grey versions, as well as the maroon and possibly even the blood & custard ones, would need to reflect these changes.

Having said that, they do look nice - but I wonder how this will affect someone like Shaun Kay (EasiBuild) whose business IS coach kits? Will this be another manufacturer who bites the dust?

Thoughtfully - Peter

Well, Shawn produces almost every variant of Mk1, so I suspect he'll still have business with the catering cars, first class stuff (for now) and so on.

My niggle is the coupling system. Bearing in mind Mk1s use the knuckle coupler with retracted buffers, why are the buffer heads shown in contact in the drawing? One of those inevitable compromises, I suppose, but a niggle nonetheless.

,,,,,and maybe just maybe, one sunshiney day , some enterprising soul might take a punt and offer up some really fine RTR 7mm Southern Electrics..................somethin( for example) like a 2-Bil......best not hold me breath tho

Peter,
Bearing in mind an as-yet-unfulfilled announcement of a year or two ago I think Shaun has plenty he'd like to be doing. There are other vehicles that are the same shape as Mk1s y'know... ;)

And they're not done properly in 7mm either at the moment.

I wondered about that too, but hopefully, a solution will present itself. I've often wished Bachmann would blow their Mk1s up to 7mm scale (minus those roof ribs!), but now Lionheart have taken up the challenge, I'm sure the wait will have been worth it. :)

EasiBuild will not be the only manufacturer affected by this announcement. We will finish our RKB & RB kits [which are 95% done anyway] and these were, in any case, to be the last of our Mk.1 types to be covered. I imagine we might still sell the odd kit of the types they don't cover, but most modellers don't have trains long enough that they aren't catered with just the BSK, SK/SO or CK vehicles they have announced. Maybe there is some scope for detail sets?!!! I wonder too if the recently announced re-tooling of the JLTRT Mk.1s will now go ahead.

If they modelled Southern Region then coaching sets are short enough as either 4 car sets BSK-CK-SK-BSK or 3 car sets BSK-CK-BSK and variants thereof.

SEMG online has a coaching set diagram list http://www.semgonline.com/coach/CoachSets.txt - you have to look about 2/5 down the table for set numbers 515 et seq for Mk1 coaches.

For anyone interested, the first batch Dapol produce will be 'as built', in other words before the corrosion repairs.

The second batch will be with the the window beading (at least) to cover the later life of these coaches, so prospective buyers need to be aware of these modifications.

Information from Kevin Grindley the Dapol Sales Admin Manager.

Depends on what they class as the first batch - I'd wager you won't see butt hinges and small radius droplights on the doors...

There'll still be room for the likes of JLTRT, Easi-build, and (especially if the fittings become available) from DJP/MMP for no matter what they say, Dapol won't cover all of the variants and time periods possible and there are always those that want a little bit more...

Don't look too hard - but the door stops on the vehicle illustrated are all wrongly positioned - only one door has "it" in the right place, but there's no matching stop on the body, and what is that Vee Hanger doing away over there? Oh dear.

Hi Bob
To be fair, on the first flyer, Richard has stated he welcomes constructive comment :)

I'll stick with Easybuild, I've started down this route and I want my coaches to match up so I doubt I'll get any Dapol Mk1's though they do seem to look like good value.
