Designing For Laser Cutting

Some significant progress today, the roof has been tiled and a wash of colour has been added

IMG_5405.jpg

More weathering to do on this side, principally algae and damp as it is a north facing wall
IMG_5406.jpg
More general flaking and cracking work in progress

My aim is to have it in presentable condition for Camrail next weekend, so the glazing needs to be finished and i have the materials arriving for the guttering on order, that will then leave me to tickle the interior details with CAD for the lever frame and token and to finish weathering it.
Once Camrail is over and other jobs permitting I'm gunning for Telford with the bank, the majority of the work is done, I just need to apply myself !

Fantastic work Cynric, I very much appreciate your bringing it down to Camrail and look forward to seeing it "in the timber".

Doesn't it need a layouty diorama-ish thing to go with it?:))

Yes it does :) I need track with GWR chairs.....
The owner of the full size shed/signalbox has taken a fancy to Lambourn so who knows what might turn up as a result? ;) I have really enjoyed doing a wooden building, maybe something L&SWR might take my fancy?

I thought guttering would be a quick job
Firstly I realised that the guttering needed a 'lip' in the profile view, so I ended up soldering .3mm wire to the 2.5mm half tube, and this took a while, then I had to mitre the corners and add bracket detail. Here is one before cleanup

Placed in position, awaiting removal, primer, rust and hairspray tomorrow

From the front. The prototype had some rises and falls, which I have tried to copy.

Something else arrived in the post today:cool:

I wasn't happy with the roof and I realised that I had scaled the tiles incorrectly so....

No going back now
IMG_5420.jpg

The old tiles, and some squadron to even out any hollows

IMG_5421.jpg

it looks terrible, but its all sanded and ready to go
IMG_5423.jpg

cutting some new tiles, the laser zips through this thin card, but it needs supporting with a sacrificial piece of mdf underneath. Fingers crossed Ill get it all glued up (again) this afternoon

Looking good Cynric. Funnily enough, I thought the tiles/slates looked a bit on the small side, but I didn't like to mention it....

Sometimes you know something isn't quite right but you can't put your finger on it:)) The ridge tiles are going to be a world of pain

Whilst there is a good couple of months of subtle weather ing to do i was trying to envisage the diorama so I grabbed a quick shot and ran it through Snapseed. I know the window is wonky, and needs cleaning, but its getting close to what I have in my mind.

The guttering is a very prominent feature on this little structure so I have spent some time this evening with rust and chipping

Some rust peeping through on the underside, yes the window will be straightened

IMG_5429.jpg

The guttering from above, and I have started a little work on the roof.

Showing some texture in the gutter

IMG_54351.jpg

you can see the fall and the waviness of the gutter, the window distressing needs toning down a little as it looks a bit overcooked.

IMG_5437.jpg

My self imposed deadlined for Camrail is to get the rest of the windows in and ease back some of the weathering

That is looking really good, I must try and find some more display space for "show and tell" next weekend.

Looking to further the rundown look I thought I would try a bit of boarding on one of the windows
I quite like it at this end
IMG_5439.jpg

but I'm less keen here, although logically a leaking down pipe could have rotted the window
IMG_5440.jpg

Any thoughts? is it too much?

Boarded up windows OK, but why would they have been boarded up when all other glass is intact?

And why both ends?

Gently decaying railway buildings weren't partially boarded up, it tended to be all or nothing. I'm voting for more glazing:D

I think Adrian's right about the guttering too:eek:

Well you did ask...

Well done guv. It looks the dogs danglies.

But while were mentioning things , i agree with Simon, surely it wouldnt be boarded at all unless the glass was smashed.
Althougth it looks great and is a nice touch.;).

I agree with Lancer:eek:,I doubt it very much if 2 large window panels would have been boarded up. I the good old green days the boxes used to check the tail lights and used to send tail lights complete to the next box down the line, I am sure that the window would have been repaired ASAP to enable the signal man to do his job properly.

Simon, Adrian have some faith in me :))
Banana shaped scan

yes it also went across the far end as well ;)

I just thought about boarding the porch side. looking at Robertsons WR signalling book they did occasionally board windows.

This is another I fancy doing, the main shed was demolishes but the office was left intact.

Thats the thing, once you stray from strictly as per prototype you get overtaken by imagination. Ill leave all the windows intact then :)

There are a couple of general shots here

I have been commissioned to do the goods shed and fancy one for myself in this condition
