Ex-LNER Class J6 0-6-0

The LNER Class J6 0-6-0s were the final development of a long line of mixed traffic 0-6-0 tender locos for the Great Northern Railway. The 521 series of 15 engines were designed by H A Ivatt, and built at Doncaster in 1911. They were designated as GNR Class J22. After Mr Ivatt's retirement at the end of 1911, H N Gresley developed an improved version, the 536 series. These featured a boiler set back in the frames and shorter cab, making the fireman's job a little easier, and some other modifications and updates to the original Ivatt design. A total of 95 Gresley locos were built up to 1922, all at Doncaster works.

The class survived until the early 1960s, and could be seen over most of the former LNER system. Coupled to a variety of tenders, some were also fitted for steam heating. The model represents 64253, shedded at Hornsey, in the late 1950s.

This model, to 7mm scale, Finescale O Gauge standards, has been built from the Gladiator Models (Fourtrack) etched brass and nickel silver kit with cast whitemetal and brass details. The full inside motion and chassis, powered with an ABC gearbox, was built for me by Paul Penn-Sayers (@Locomodels) based on LG Miniatures components. LG Miniatures also supplied cast lamp brackets to replace the rather weak etched examples, and the various tools on the loco. The vacuum brake pipework is from Connoisseur Models. Smokebox and works plates are custom items from Narrow Planet. The client will be weathering the loco, and fitting Dingham couplings. Temporary screw link couplings were fitted for the photo session.
