"All I had to do was form the bottom reverse curve to fit nicely between the splasher tops"

You make it Sound easy , that reverse bend and the upright bend are astonishing, A Master class.

Yes Dad did "help" with one, but I had to fold the foot plate, build the chassis, paint it etc, but he did manage most of the rest at age 80, so not bad really.

Hi,

It's a one-step back moment....

I worked out it was most unlikely I could get a truly invisible join between boiler and firebox in the absence of a boiler band. Rather than spend hours trying to do so, I decided not to attempt it at all. I actually have 2 x L12 etches, so I had the opportunity to start again on the boiler/firebox. Without further ado, the microflame came out and the firebox was off in no time at all, without damage to any of the other seams.

A bit sad having got the firebox on nicely in the first place.

However, I have made the smokebox which went together well and cut out the new boiler firebox, so onwards and upwards.

I hope to have the new parts in place later today, but I'm off the the GRA exhibition at the SVR now.

Hi

The GRA exhibition was very good indeed, the best standard I think I have seen and well worth a visit.

Yesterday I started again on the boiler and firebox, and manipulating it as one unit was much easier than I feared, probably helped because I knew where the reverse curves on the firebox were. At least the join won't be visible now!

And here the unit is placed on the footplate, held only by a broach for height at the firebox end. This shows how close you can get the forming and avoid having to gap fill with solder. Also, the closer you get, the less stress there is on the metal, and in particularly reducing the risk of pulling the half-etched splasher tops out of shape.

And all together:

I have to attach the frame tops above the footplate before I go further.

The fit of boiler/firebox to the footplate is fabulous! I had a lot of fun and games with the T3, Even now I'm not to pleased with my result.

Hi,

I've been busy beavering away on the L12.

I've attached the boiler unit to the previous work and built and fitted the transverse water tube covers. Horrible things to look at and a sod to fit. There is a helpful jig to set the height, but that only goes so far, as if it is the slightest bit out horizontally or vertically, or too high or too low, it sticks out a mile. Despite my care, each side was removed before being refitted to my satisfaction.

I also had to round the top and bottom front edges. The cover was far too sharp in this respect. I added some copper wire to the inside join, flooded with solder (not often I'll say that) and rounded with files. I don't see how the initial shape could be bettered, I think its just that no 2 people will build the body exactly the same and there will always be a little bit of filing to fit. Glad to move on!

The front end wings had the bracket etches added, and the front cover was formed to shape. Again, it dropped into a recess on the footplate.

And this is where I am up to now.

I want to get the cab interior and roof fitted before Telford, which will mean most of the etched work on the body will be finished.

Au contraire, Simon. That's a lovely design spoiled by the water tube covers. Even the T9s looked cr*p when fitted with them, and who can deny that the T9 was the most elegant of locomotives? (Stand by your bed, Simon T).

Of course, (Swindon standardisation notwithstanding) we are finding that, actually, there wasn't a lot. They just all looked the same.:p:))

I agree Brian, a T9 in motion gliding along is a joy to behold.

Mr Tricky is out with his magic invisible solder again. Superb modelling.

Looks just as good in the flesh. Enjoyed talking to folk on the Finney7 stand, looking forward to the LSWR T9 release. Pleased to hear the kits are shifting well.
