4mm Fryers Lane

My first thread on here after lurking for a while, introducing Fryers Lane. The layout was started back in 2013, inspired by the Scalefour Society's Standard Gauge Workbench challenge (layout with a scenic section no longer than 4' 8 1/2"). Progress so far has been documented on RMweb and (to a lesser extent on the Scalefour forum) so I'll not cover too much old ground here.

The layout was loosely based on Bloxwich (near Walsall) and depicts the area to the left of the level crossing on the above plan.

Recent activity has been focused on making a few improvements to the layout in readiness for taking it to a local exhibition in Bloxwich on Saturday.

Nice to see this here Mark. Looking forward to 'helping' you operate at Bloxwich. Although the layout is small, it is fun to operate - more entertaining then some much larger layouts I've driven.

Will be bringing marker pens to write the DCC addresses on the loco roofs.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking the layout to Bloxwich on Saturday, a big thanks to Chris for helping operate and to the members of the Bloxwich club for the invite.

It was the first time the layout had been out since DEMU Showcase 11 months ago and it had seen very little use in that time, so I was relieved that everything worked as it should. The layout attracted some positive comments from its audience, a few of who recognised the resemblance to the location it is based upon, which surprised me a bit, considering the amount of modeller's licence applied.

I always try to make some notes after an exhibition, primarily to remind myself of aspects of the layout that could be improved upon, so I'll post those here, mainly as a reminder to myself, but any thoughts, observations or suggestions are welcome.

Rolling Stock
I need to swap the DCC decoder in 20132 as no matter what I do to the settings its behaviour is erratic (at best).
Could probably do with one more loco, to act as spare or for variety.
Fit AJs to the HEAs rather than three links.

Operation
On the whole, the (AJ) couplings worked reasonably well. The two original Seep electromagnets don't pull as strongly as the smaller DG ones. Magnet 1 (on the mainline at the right hand side) never gets used and might as well be removed, which just leaves one to replace.
The rotatory switch that selects the magnets needs labelling to avoid the trial and error approach to uncoupling.
An additional siding branching off the first road in the right hand fiddle yard would allow the DMU to shuttle while shunting is going on without having to slide the traverser over to an empty road. Something like this:

I'm not sure that the HEA rake adds much operational interest/entertainment value. Possibly mix the HEAs in with the other wagons rather than operate as a fixed rake?
I'll need another stock box for the rest of the nearly finished stock as the current boxes are now full.

Presentation
Add more detail, fences, signs, some lights, etc.
Possibly a couple of trees to give height and divide the scene.
Add a second, stacked, Portakabin to hide fiddle yard exit.
Point rodding.
Repair damaged speed restriction sign.
Ground signal for yard access?

Transportation
The metal trestles take up too much space in the car (and rattle horribly).
Switch to four small, wooden, tabletop standing trestles (would need two 6' tables at exhibitions).
Transit protection for front, could double up as a lid when not in use.

Enjoyed helping out. Layout ran well and I think everything in your action list would further enhance the layout.

20132 certainly was entertaining to drive, even more so if you attempted shunting. Interesting to learn it was the same model and had the the same chip and same settings as the other 20 that ran well.

The second portacabin was a lucky find from the Topps Trains bargain bin at the show - just what you wanted. Pity you let those other 4 long wagony things get away...

For the benefit of those who don’t use Chris’s patented system for wagon recognition, the above mentioned “long wagony things” were VGA vans. Hard to come by in the original red livery, so I was very tempted by five of them at a very reasonable price. In the end, I managed to resist temptation and just had the one; and another HEA; and a Knightwing Portakabin kit...

The layout doesn’t really need any more stock (that’s what I have to keep telling myself). In addition to the stock used on Saturday, there are probably a dozen more wagons awaiting conversion to P4 or that have been converted but haven’t had their couplings fitted. One thing I have considered is replacing the VDA and VGA that I have in sub sector livery with earlier examples. Then, with the addition of a few blue diesels, run the layout in an early to mid ‘80s guise.

At a total length of around 3.9m Fryers Lane is, quite obviously, too long for the 3.3m long room where it lives. At home it tends to be erected with just the right hand fiddle yard attached, in this form it can operate as an Inglenook puzzle, treating the through line as one of the sidings.
For a while now I've been intending to add a short fiddle yard to the left end, for a bit of additional space to play with. After a bit of a rummage through various offcuts of ply, I managed to throw this together (if you are easily offended by shoddy woodwork, please look away now).

Trackwork won't be anything exciting, just three lengths of whatever track I can find lying around. First though there is a slight height discrepancy to deal with...

I presume that the fiddle is the right height for the lower rear track?
Yeah, that's the height any sensible person would make it...

Truth is, board height was dictated by the size that the strips of leftover ply had been cut too. That's not a problem though as I'm considering recycling the aluminum angle from the Mk1 fiddle yard's cassettes on this new shorty fiddle yard.

It's been a while - maybe time to bring this thread up to date.

I never got around to permanently fixing any track down on the new fiddle yard for the left end of the layout, instead, about 12 months ago, I decided to cut the end off the baseboard to allow for a longer scenic area. At the same time, I decided to extend the depth of the layout as I've always had a problem lighting the layout where the track runs very close to the front edge of the board.20210308_182515.jpg.a8e9162807e6b746d3b382c4b3e6ca95.jpg

Changes to the track plan were relatively minor, just adding a RH turnout at the end of the existing tandem to create an additional siding.

This probably takes us up to spring of last year, at which point the whole project stalled a bit.

For most of last year, the layout sat unloved and ignored while various other things occupied my time. I did put together a couple of bufferstops for the new siding and newly truncated main line.

Just recently I've found myself back in the right frame of mind to continue with the project and have been making a little progress with the new turnout.

Unusually I even remembered to solder the electrical connections on before putting all of the chairs in place so avoided melted chairs!

No plans to get back out on the exhibition circuit with it just yet, I'm quite enjoying being able to work on it at my own pace rather than having a deadline to meet.

Yes, some fairly extensive modifications- I'm considering taking them even further and changing the garage (AKA Fryers Lane Tyre and Exhaust Centre) to an older style of building. Much as I like the current one it does prevent me from running stock from earlier eras. Now that the length of concrete sleeperd flat bottom railed track has gone, it's only really the garage building that prevents it being a multi-era layout, which is a tempting prospect.
