7mm Getting all-crewed up... hydraulics welcome

Dog Star

Western Thunderer
So we have the kits... two of PW's best Cl.52... and thought about the livery (for a minute or three). We have thought about the names (not got far on this one, Western Legend sounds ok, not so sure about Western Saloon). Now the time has come to think a bit more seriously... because we need to find some suitable figures for the crew and what better place to start than asking at the home of 7mm Westerns - even though the NRM seems only to have a plate from Thunderer.

One of the engines is going to be built circa 1963 period... which to me means driver and fireman in traditional Western Region dress of jacket over bib and braces crowned with a grease cap. The other engine has access to Tardis and is fluctuating between late 60s maroon and blue.... ah, not so sure about the fashion for drivers at that time, any suggestions?

And where do you buy yours from? Omen or Heroes of the footplate or Aiden Campbell?

And finally, I did ask before and cannot remember where so please excuse the reprise. I fancy having an inspector in the cab, modelled on Stan French from Reading - I recall a long brown lab coat with a dark brown trilby. Any suggestions?

Thank you Jordan, I had not thought of the potential of Bus drivers. I have found a candidate for the traction inspector, Omen figure 267 looks suitable.

Phill has used Omen Diesel Drivers (probably in his Thread somewhere in the early pages).
Yes I use Omen for BR blue period.......

If you search Cynric's content I think he used 'Heroes of the Footplate'?, for earlier diesel period drivers :)

Yes I use Omen for BR blue period.......
Thank you, looks like half of the problem is sorted.

Your photo could be a suitable candidate for a caption competition... "hands on buzzers, your starter for ten" as an opener.

Ah, yes, supplementary Q. When did the unions agree to single manning?

I have often admired Aiden Campbell's work at Telford. A very talented artist. Has anyone used his figures?

I think I know what your next project is......

If this is your next project, then Andrew C Stadden's website should be your next port of call

"Oh Mister Porter" set at a very reasonable £7.50 + 70p P&P. I have several of his figures including BR crew and can highly recommend them.

I also have various well known "passengers" from his range including Gresley, Stanier, Einstein and (worryingly) Beeching.

How about... Western Star ?
Now that is an interesting comment for I have often wondered why Swindon did not follow along the "Star" theme for the Westerns... after all, the GWR 4000 Star class included Morning Star, Evening Star, Rising Star plus re-use of Evening Star for the BR 9F engine. So we might have had Westerns with the names Western Sunrise, Western Sunset, Western Morning....
