Gladiator Stanier Mogul 2-6-0 - Does anyone know it's provenance?

Hi all,

I have a friend who has just bought one of these and was looking for feedback on how buildable it is and I was wondering if anyone could advise which range it was from originally -(@Genghis) or any other tips would be a help.

I am sure that being from the Gladiator range it will be buildable but in my experience some of the hand drawn kits need a bit more care than others and this chap is a novice at kit building at the moment.

Standard Dave Andrews designed kit with no nasty surprises. There was a build ( Jazz's workbench) over on rmweb a while back....would be worth looking up,

The kit is designed by David Andrews and generally goes together well as you would expect. There is one problem: the frames are too long at the front end and need cutting back in front of the cylinders. This is discussed in my thread on RMWeb:

The Heaton Mersey Mogul - Kitbuilding & Scratchbuilding

Some material may also need to be removed from the smokebox door ring so that the door seats properly.

Make sure that the firebox etch is well-annealed before trying to form it.

One gentleman down under has had problems getting the frame extensions to fit, but that has completely baffled me as to why.

Hope this helps and thanks for the purchase!

I think Bob Alderman wrote up a build of a mogul in the GoG Gazette some years ago.

Whether that was the same kit, I'm not sure, but it would have been quite a while ago: I was living in Yeovil when he was building it and that places it the better part of 20 years back. I've operated it, but cannot, for the life of me, remember what Bob thought of the kit.

I have probably misled you Rob - I dug out Bob's review and, whilst it is a Stanier Mogul, it was actually the now-effectively defunct Chowbent/JLTRT mogul rather than the Gladiator one.

Rob,
There is a build and review of the Gladiator Mogul in MRJ no.91, dated Christmas 1996. The author, G.W.Fillingham, deals with the problem with the frames, and one or two other issues with chassis and pony truck. He described himself as an inexperienced builder, so his review might be helpful to your friend for that reason.

Couple of copies of this issue on Ebay at the moment if you or your friend don't have it, or I'm sure I can copy the relevant pages if it's just for personal use.

I do recall it now - if I remember rightly, there was also a reply to that article in the letters of the following edition.

Pony truck: I had forgotten about that but on re-reading my blog it is clear that the top stretcher is too small, but easily replaced by scrap etch. Some fettling of the front brakes was also required to avoid fouling the cylinders.
