Back at Crymlyn A Shop, Dai the Paint applies the finishing touches to the handrails on the pair of Toads being built for the Great Western Railway contract.

He has been working hard since 6 o'clock!

We wonder what he will say when the foreman tells him there are more handrails to paint on the other side of the vans?

Nice!
Now here’s a question. I know that the footboard and handrail allows someone to move along the side of the van but who would do it and why?

Possibly the guard if the train started off before he was aboard?

Was it so that a shunter could easily ride along on the side of the van when shunting manovers were taking place? He would have a long stepboard and sufficient handrails to hold onto!

This reminded me of a tale told by an old workmate. He was very straight laced and the only time he was known to smile was when he had wind! However, this gentleman's father was a passenger guard and working from Swansea High St. One day when departing from a left hand platform face, as usual there was a problem as the platform curved to the left making sighting between the guard and driver difficult if not impossible when a train was occupying the next platform. An unofficial practice involved the guard walking across behind the train to the adjacent platform where he could see the driver and giving him the green flag. The driver would then wait a pre-determined time before proceeding with the train. All well and good but unfortunately for our guard on this occasion he had previously reprimanded a group of students for being rather rowdy. They had taken advantage of his departure to the adjacent platform to lock the Guard's door and on his return he was unable to open it before the train departed! The staff quickly arranged a taxi to deliver him to the next station at Neath where the train was held until his arrival.
