Hi,

My name is Graeme and I have just joined Western Thunder today. I have been recommended to join by friends already members of the site and I look forward to getting to know more of you. Here is a bit about me as an introduction:

I am a medically retired Train Driver, having begun my career with British Rail in 1982. I finished my driving career with Virgin West Coast Trains in September of 2010. I have 33 years service on the railway to date, 32 years of which have been spent in the locomotive footplate grades. My career has seen me working at a variety of depots throughout the UK (they are, in order): Haymarket (BR), Buxton (BR), Driver Training at Crewe Diesel (BR) Longsight (BR), Millerhill (Transrail & EWS), Toton (EWS), Leicester Beal Street (EWS) and lastly, Waverley (Virgin Trains).

My love for modelling is therefore wholly based and built upon the many wonderful memories I have of my career as a young Secondman and Driver working on the locomotive footplate.

I model mainly in the 1970s and 1980s periods. My modelling does also run into the 1990s scene, but my favorite and most preferred period by far reflects my memories as a kid stood on numerous platform ends throughout the country with my brother, school chums and my 'Ian Allan' spotters book in hand, then as a young teenage Secondman working on the footplate with British Rail.

By the time of privatisation, EWS had, by natural progression from Transrail, become my new employer. With progressively worsening conditions along with a sheer lack of locomotive traction and variety becoming the 'norm' on the railways, my enthusiasm for the job took a massive down-turn. I gave up on modelling completely and used the railway merely as a job like any other, as a way of simply earning a decent living. It is for this reason, that having few fond memories of the Post Privatisation period of the job I do not model beyond the 1990s.

I own 'Hazelbank' , a finescale 'OO' scale 4mm layout. Built over three years with the unconditional and extremely kind help of my fellow club members in the Scottish Diesel and Electric Group (SDEG), the hard graft resulted in the layout being completed in time for its debut outing at the annual 'Ayr Model Railway Exhibition' in September of 2012. It appears at exhibitions throughout the UK.

My layout portfolio also includes:

Dalnottar Riverside ('O' gauge) formally an Ian Futters creation, completely rebuilt by Chris Nevard.

Brewhouse Quay ('OO' gauge) built by Chris Nevard. and,

Cement Quay ('OO' gauge) also built by Chris Nevard.

Any interest in, and requests for 'any' of these layouts for exhibition purposes can be made to:

moysieboy@gmail.com

Thank you for reading about me. I do hope to meet you out on the exhibition circuit one day soon.

Welcome old chum, glad you made it here too.
For those who are not so familiar with Hazelbank I filmed it for Moysie at Perth Show last year.

And some more at Falkirk show last November.

Moysie is part of the Scottish Diesel & Electric crew who will be helping me with my layout Harlyn Road when it re-enters the exhibition circuit in DCC preservation mode.

Thanks for your welcome mth! Unfortunately I am no longer on the footplate. I am medically retired following a serious illness 4 and a half years ago which left me paralysed. I hope you enjoy your job. I loved mine, even after 28 years on the footplate :) I have many friends in DBS.

Keep them under 0.5mb and about 1400 wide max it should be fine Moysie. Copy from our facebook album and they should be fine to go as they are.

Welcome in, Moysie

And welcome to the wonderful world of 7mm, too. Small enough to handle and big enough to show the details.

Have fun!

Ian
