Hi, just to say thanks for allowing me to join Western Thunder.

By way of introduction, my name is Tony Conlay and I live in Cornwall but work pretty much work all over the world. So I have long periods away from home and the workbench.

I have been modelling railways for the last 35 years but moved over to 0 gauge about 15 years ago and my main interest is in the GWR in Cornwall from 1914 to 1922. I am building (very slowly) a portable exhibition layout of the planned but never built terminus (St Mawes) of the Fal Valley Railway. The layout includes a lot of "modeller's licence" wrapped around a proposed railway that was progressing through the design stage and was very nearly built. I have based the layout design using typical GW track formations and buildings from actual stations in Cornwall and Devon - many were built by the same contractors. I have built the trackwork using C&L components. Wiring and point motors are next on the job list!

Along with 5 other friends, we have just exhibited our new 7mm layout, Weatherbury Magna, at the recent Festival of Steam event at Swindon in early September. It is a GWR/ LSWR junction and the trackwork is all built using C&L components with a mixture of scratch built and laser cut buildings. It still has all the signalling to add and it is due to appear at Swindon again in 2019.

In addition I am a member of the Cornwall 0 Gauge Group.

Welcome Tony, I am sure that you will like it here. However as you have probably noticed the currency here is pictures, lots and lots of pictures.
If you ever get stuck for information or techniques just ask, it is never very long before someone will pass by and give you an answer.

Paul.

Welcome Tony, hope you bring a bit more Western back to the board, it's all gone a bit 'scattergun' as they say round here. Me being guilty too of course ....

Thanks Simon. The signal box is very heavily based on Perranwell Station, also on the Falmouth branch. The main difference is that in order for the signalman to have line of sight through the station I had to turn the cabin through 180 degrees. This meant that the lobby and steps on the model are at the rear rather than the front and the window positions adjusted to suit.
Here's a picture of the interior.

Whoops, I meant Perranwell. It was still there on my first trip on the Falmouth line in 1976 and it made quite an impression - apart from remembering its name:rolleyes:

I do like the attention paid to the track Tony, very authentic especially the check and wing rails being rusty. I look forward to seeing pictures of your layout.

Best regards

Thanks all for your warm welcome and I'm pleased that you like Weatherbury Magna.

I must stress that this layout is built by a group of six: myself, Jon Hewlett, Roy Payne, Richard Honey, Ian White and Vernor Bates. It is not finished yet as signalling needs to be installed plus other bits and pieces...and it is going to be extended in time for Swindon 2019!

Julian, thanks for the comments about the track. It was made using C&L components and ballasted with stone from Attwood Aggregates. We did a lot of research into track formations and details such as the facing point locks. At the down end of the station, the junction where the LSWR crosses the GWR is based on the crossing at Highbridge.

I guess at some point I should start a thread on Weatherbury Magna in a more appropriate place!
