Out of interest, did you have any issues with the stiles buckling during soldering?

Dikitriki said:
No, I didn't. I used a hot iron and went in quickly with 145. Frankly it took so long to poke the pesky .3mm wire through the  .35mm holes that the whole thing never had the chance to get too hot. The jig is clever in that it has room for expansion built into it too.

If anything I had the opposite problem in that when I cleaned up the outside of the stiles, I found that I hadn't lingered long enough on a few joins and they were dry, ie the rungs pushed in or out. It was a simple matter to swipe over the 2 or 3 with a tinned iron and that did the trick.

By the way, I chemically blackened the jig to stop any solder bleed attaching the ladder to it. That worked well too.

Thanks for that Richard and apologies for not acknowledging your reply sooner - I had forgotten I'd asked the question.  :-[

Top draw stuff Richard,

Even the wife sat and watched which has to be a positive move so I thank you for that alone. It was lovely to see plenty of LNER motive power as well. Could you please tell me which kit the K3 is and what its like to build so that I can stick one on the wish list, keep the videos coming,

Cheers Mick

Hi Mike

The guest appearance at about 4:30 was by Allan Wood, he of Bredon fame.

Thanks Mick

Glad to be of help with your domestic arrangements!

The K3 is the Anchorage one, designed by Jim Harris, and a collaboration between him and MG Sharp. They do come up occasionally second hand - a second member of the Heyside group has recently picked one up. It looks nice, but had all the JH 'issues' of the time. Clive built it, so I'll ask him to post a little more detail.

Cheers

I built a K3 for a customer and was so impressed with it I built another one for myself. Must have been quite a beast though I never saw the real thing.

Thanks Richard, additional K3 guidance will be much appreciated as I would definately like to build one at some point. I once built a Jim Harris BR Standard 4 2-6-0 and certainley had ' issues ' alright, but the least said the better!

Hello Mick,

The K3 was built at least 15 years ago and my memory is not too good about the details of the build. I do remember that the valences were rather flimsy and easily distorted when shaping the footplate so, if you do manage to get hold of a kit, I would strongly recommend adding a temporary jig/support from scrap etch. The best advice I can give is to keep an eye on Tony's build via the link on Richard's last post. He is a very talented builder and tends to be more thorough in his research than I would be - I tend to trust the kit designers research a little too much!

Regards,
Clive

Hi Clive and Richard,

Thanks for the help with this it's much appreciated. It looks like Tony has his work cut out from the start but i'll keep a close eye on it and gleen as much as possible. Who knows someone may bring a reworked kit out in the future as it seems the old ones are quite thin on the ground,

Cheers Mick

Hi

Today was a working day on the layout, so I got the camera out to show the recent progress.

I've been working on a 5 doll gantry, and here the bridge is tried for size

Hi Richard,

Great to see a progress report on Heyside it seems like a while since you updated and it's been missed certainly by me and i'm sure others  I like the look of the lower quadernat goods loop starter, nicely squeezed in against the wall. Looking forward to seeing Heyside at it's first exhibition,

All the Best Mick

Rather you than me with the ballasting..!!! :shit: ... one task I really loathe... I did the whole 4ft of single track "mainline" yesterday on Schiller Point and it was 2 hours of sheer tedium....

Heyside's ballasting looks very neat, though

Hi Mick

Nice to be back after a couple of months of a stupid workload. Full steam ahead now, as I am going to try to spend 2-3 hours per day on the layout. Heyside has been invited to Manchester this October - I shall be sending back my formal acceptance today and then the panic will set in.

Clive's signal work has been a  fantastic help. It's meant I have been able to get on with the basics - track, ballasting, baseboard joins - in the knowledge that someone else was moving other bits along, in a supremely capable fashion.

Hi Jordan

Ballasting is a horrible task. It is looking neat now, but the hours of work involved........I wasn't intending to do quite the wholesale track replacement I did, so doing so much ballasting wasn't on the original agenda. Then we have to think about point rodding, signal wire runs, facing point locks and covers......

Cheers

Hi Richard,

great to see you posting again. The progress shots look excellent, ballasting can be theraputic or a pain, just depends how much you have to do and your technique - bull in a china shop appraoch is definitely a no no though

... and today I find that although it's dried, it hasn't stuck... :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
... will have to go over it again with less-diluted pva.... ::) :shit:

Are you guys still using the eye dropper/pva/fairy liquid method ? or is there a faster way ?  I will probably be ballasting Withercombe this summer, so any tips are much appreciated  :D

I spray my ballast with a water/soap solution, and just use a good size brush (artist's #4 or so - not 2-inch!!) to dribble on the diluted pva. I did have an eye-dropper but the rubber bulb perished last year, and I also found it was too easy to put pva 'bubbles' on the ballast as the last of the mix was put down from the dropper tip.
I think where I've gone wrong is that I've over-diluted the pva in the first place, then it's been further diluted when dripped on the 'wetted' ballast...

I do have a cunning plan  ;D, I'm thinking of using a Turkey Baster rather than a eye dropper (god knows if it will work  ) :)) :)) :)).........could speed things up though .

Hi Phill

I don't think there is a quick way to ballast. It's a meticulous, slow and tedious operation. In our case, being an exhibition layout, we needed to make sure it was well and truly stuck, so went over it a second time with a less dilute form of PVA, after having corrected for any blemishes.

And yes, it's a dropper and dilute PVA.

Right, I'm off to put all the dummy fishplates and railjoints in now.

Cheers

Richard
