… that I must report the passing of my flux brush.

As a humble No2 natural hair brush, Perkins came into my workshop as a means of applying solvent adhesives. Eventually, he was promoted to the more challenging task of applying liquid fluxes. In that role he served admirably for almost a decade.

Affectionately known as "The Grog Brush", Perkins continued sterling service, despite corrosion of the ferrule until around 1130hrs GMT today. Sadly, with most of his hairs long gone, the task of spreading Carr's Red Label proved too much for him, and he passed to the Great Wastebasket.

His successor, Humbrol "Palpo" No2, is currently handling duties. Let's hope he has the staying power of Old Grog.

A private service and funeral will be held later. No flowers, by request.

Dear Heather

Perkins can live on!

Have you considered recycling the handle by fitting suitably shaped wire to one end and transforming it into a shunter's pole?

Just a suggestion.

Regards.

Heather, I can only offer my condolences. I had a similar bereavement about 18 months ago and found the loss too much to bear. Fortunately a change in circumstances has found me with only an RSU as a close companion, and its friend Carrs solder cream. So I don't need another hairy friend (for a while).

Seriously RSU's don't work for everything, as I found out recently when I tried to laminate the frame pieces on my 08 shunter. I can't wait to unpack but it is still many months away.

Adrian,

Do you recommend this product?

I accessed the CPC web page and noted that there look like two similar bottles at slightly different prices - different bottles? different needles?

thanks, Graham

Gosh, you all make me feel very inferior. For larger work (admittedly in a larger scale) I use an old needle file to blob the flux somewhere near the right place and it seems to find its own way into the joint. So Heather, your brush can live on as a flux stick.

Sorry to hear of your loss Heather.

My favourite paint brush, of Revell origin, about a size 3 from the early 70's and now at least 40 years old, gets used on enamels, acrylics, solder paste, waterslide transfers and anything else that needs brushing. Despite this abuse, it survives and still performs well. Remarkably it still has more hair than I do!

I like it because I'm using the Building O gauge flux and I can give the bottle a quick shake to mix it and then just put a drop or two just where I need it.

It's the same bottle and same needle just a different price. The first bit of the reference number is the same SD01628 - the last couple of extra digits are usually used to identify stuff in the sales pamphlets. In this case the flux bottles are also in the January Sale brochure.

At one point in the past you used to be able to just add the extra digits onto the end of any item reference number and get a discount but they soon closed that loophole!

After a decade of such faithful service I would have thought Perkins would have earnded a more fitting retirement than being consigned to some mere tool box or, worse still, the Great Wastebasket!

Why not promote him to a rerailing pole and let him ride off into the sunset sitting proudly atop the saddle tank of a Darjeeling class B locomotive? .... :)

I like the idea of a flux bottle, recently I have been looking for an alternative to an open bottle of flux after knocking a bottle over. I was thinking flux application pen, but I think they are more for precision electronics work, also these bottles look very good value.
