Jinty's Non Western WB

Jinty

Western Thunderer
Well after joining WT, and threatening to put something on a WB thread, here is my start.

JLTRT Class 4F, Finished as 44487 in BR Late Crest Black.
Apart from a little hiccup with the numbering the whole kit went together very well, and as it was only my second etched kit I was very pleased with how it has turned out.
The loco is currently in Pristine livery, no weathering has been done at all. I've added real coal to the tender, a billy can in the cab and a small shovel on the tender by the water gauge.
Powered through an MSC (Ex R. Chaplin) gearbox and Cannon motor at 40:1 ratio, and fitted with an ESU V4.0 Lokpilot Decoder.

001.jpg 002.jpg003.jpg 004.jpg 005.jpg

After looking at the photos I can see a couple of omissions/faults that will be corrected.

I have more to build, including an Ex L&Y Class 27 3F loco & tender, I'll need a couple or three 57xx's, an Ivatt 2-6-0 & tender (or two), a 2251 class loco & tender and I intend to have a 'might of been' scenario of a class 24/1 diesel, a 56xx (because I like them!!) and obviously a Jinty!!!!

Hi Jinty,
Did you use an air brush or a rattle can?
Looks like a nice smooth satin finish!

Thanks Grumpy (That doesn't sound good!!),

It was a Halfords rattler, I do like their satin black, matt black and their primers of course.
But my railway colours are either Railmatch enamel, sprayed with cellulose thinners, or I had a few BR colours made up by using the vehicle equivalent by Halfords, for example, Land Rover Coniston Green to my eyes looks an exact match for BR standard green. Again, I use celly thinners to airbrush it.

Jinty ;)

I didn't realise you can use cellulose thinners with enamel? I have used it with acrylics.
I have just taken delivery of BR blue and YP yellow cellulose from Spraywell who used to supply JLTRT as I found the finish outstanding. Also taken delivery of an Iwatta airbrush for weathering as my Trusty Badger 150 is playing up.
I also used Ron Chaplin gearboxes on my JLTRT Western and I must say they are superb!
(Edit for spelling errors as my iPhone likes to decide on which words I can use )

I've always used cellulose thinners, although I find that not all the Humbrol enamels take kindly to it. If I can I like to get automotive celly paint mixed up but I can't find the data that used to be around for the matching colours. Does that Spraywell company supply it in litres or rattle cans only?

I use an AB airbrush from Everything Airbrush, I have about four of them, 3 syphons and a gravity, I also purchased a larger spraygun recently for larger areas such as coach sides, etc......

006.jpg

Yet to use it, but I think it will give a better finish using celly.
PS: The artwork on the wall of my garage is not mine!!!

iPhones eh, you've got to love their auto correct!!!!

Looks like you will be spraying 12" to the foot coaches :)
I spoke to Phil, the MD of Spraywell Dudley, and yes, they can supply in litre tins or other quantities if read.
Contact 01384 456069.

He sent me this info which he gave his permission to copy:

Hi Richard, my names Phil and I'm responding to your request to Gary for a list of available rail colours. As you may notice the list below directly refers to RM (Howes Railmatch) colours. It's also a simple cut and paste effort, so you'll be pleased to know there are also many more. Basically all RM colours to the best of my knowledge are available from ourselves at Spraywell Paints. Pigmentation of colour should be identical as I assure you ours is of the same source, the only difference being we are able to produce these colours in a wider range of finishes(Gloss, Semi-gloss, Satin, Matt) and topcoat materials (Cellulose, Coach enamel, QAD enamel, Acrylic, PVC) and also primers (Etch primer, Multi surface primer, Synthetic primer, Primer finisher). Colours we are unable to find in our library can be matched with our Spectrophotometer, should a suitable flat sample with a minimum surface area of 30mm x 30mm be supplied.

Thanks for the list and contact details, I gave them a call this afternoon and I can say their prices are very reasonable, and will do 1/2 litre and litre tins.

My next non Western project is a Stanier Period III coach, namely a D1851 Corridor Brake Third. I've acquired the kit from Sidelines, and I've made a small start on the bogies, as I was waiting for a book to arrive, that will help with construction.
Today, as well as an order from C&L, I received my book, The LMS Coach, 1923 - 1957 by Essery & Jenkinson, good condition and with the outside cover too!!!

007.jpg

And there it is on Plate 19, D1851.

008.jpg

I managed to aquire a few more books, GWR Coaching Stock by Russel, and A Pictorial History of GWR Locomotives Volume 1 & 2, also by Russel. So I should have enough literature to keep me going for now.

:)) :)) :'(

You just cannot have too many books...

especially as libraries seem to be doing away with the printed word (or are in Hampshire where we are encouraged to discover things, at a Discovery Centre, on a computer screen whilst eating cake and drinking tea).

Spraywell Dudley, eh? Can they match American Railroad colors? CSX Blues and yellows, for example..... ;)

Colours we are unable to find in our library can be matched with our Spectrophotometer, should a suitable flat sample with a minimum surface area of 30mm x 30mm be supplied.

I believe they could with a suitably sized section as mentioned above.

Lovely engine

Thank you.

They can charge for tea and cake....

Local Gov' have learnt to charge for just about anything this day and age, but taking books from libraries is sacrilege.

I agree with keeping in Resources. (I copied to my own resources already!) but how do I get to resources on WT? I tried and ended up with every post that's ever been on WT!

Great and useful thread anyway!

There's a software update that I need to apply to the forum, I've just been testing it on a development area but when I roll it out I will be including a resource manager for people to try. I'm hoping that this will provide a much clearer link to the various resources and a system for tagging them to make searching them easier.
