Lancastrian's Workbench

It's about time I showed something I'm currently working on. One of three Schools class locomotives from David Andrews kits.

Close-up showing 0.7mm rivets fitted.

The front buffer beam has been done too

And finally, after looking at a photo of the particular locomotive, I noticed 14 rivets which needed fitting, so it was out with the Proxxon pillar drill (thanks to Nick Baines) and 0.4mm drill bits for some 0.5mm rivets...

Cruel close-up showing some mis-alignment, but then even on the prototype, they weren't straight ! On some members of the class they were ground flush with the valance.

I note the rhs valance has 6 rivets but the lhs only 5. Damn. I've become a rivet counter. Need to get out more. Sorry.

Dave, the photos show the LHS valence. Front and rear. In counting rivets you missed the cab side sheet

I'm retrurning to this thread, as I'll use it to encompass work not associated with specific builds.
Kicking it off today is a overhaul (Heavy General) of a Wagon & Carriage Works ex-SECR H Class 0-4-4T I built around 1998, I think. It is now owned by J. Langham of the SR7mm Group.

Firstly, the beam compensation has been replaced with a semi-sprung set-up, after the frames had a clean and a session in the ultrasonic tank. It'll receive another clean up before re-painting.

Attention then turned to fixing the rear sand boxes, cast brass, to the frames and making some brackets for the sand pipes.
20230507_184609.jpg

The air reservoir tank was then modified and mounted on a new support. The pipe work and additional outlet are new items.
20230507_153301.jpg

Slots filed for locating the mounting supports and a hole drilled and tapped 10BA.

20230507_185412.jpg

I then turned to some minor repairs on the locomotive body, starting with a couple of the pipe runs associated with the push/pull gear.
20230507_213408.jpg

Repaired coupling hook pocket strengthening piece.
20230507_213503.jpg

The coupling rods were then cleaned up and treated to some chemical black. These are lovely cast NS items, which I cannot find the source of now. I believe they may have been Shedmaster, as per the P-P castings, but cannot see them in the LG range at all.

More to follow.

Ian, Laurie still lists his version of the "H" (c/w cast n/s rods), so although not listed, I suspect he does still produce them. They do look v.nice.

Paul,

I had seen this, and checked with a friend who has recently build the "Shedmaster" H. I'll have a look at the rods on his tomorrow and see if the quality is the same as the ones I purchased all those years ago. FIngers crossed.

An unexpected project at some point next week.....
20230524_172714.jpg

This is the remains of one of the brushes from the motor of my Unimat Millenium lathe.

Trying to source a replacement is seemingly a little difficult.

Ian,

the brush itself will probably be a standard size, integer millimetres.

You can hopefully buy them, and unsolder/resolder the washer and spring assembly (at the washer end).

Hi Simon,

Can't find any with a 3mm dimension. They measure @16mm (worn) x 10mm x 3mm. The other option it to buy a pair with a 6mm dimension and file them down.

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Ian
That brush is worn to the solder joint has it damaged the commutator? and how worn is the other brush compared to the worn one?
David.

David,

The other brush is fine, little wear. The commutator looks to be ok. I've given the whole rotor assembly a good clean before replacing it in the outer casing.
