You mentioned Lima tanks, Lima had a reputation of Excellent value for money far better than Hornby, Lima's achilies heel were the pancake motors they used in their loco's seemed to mar the reputation of the whole range.

Lima did produce some lovely models that were indeed excellent value for money but why did they stop short of doing the job correctly ?
I can understand first cost, and limitations of the moulding process but if you have gone to the trouble of researching for a new model then you might as well get the basic dimensions correct at least. Of course it is not just Lima who was guilty of this and indeed it still goes on today.
I think they did a brilliant job on the ex GWR railcar which with a little work can be lifted into a much better model but others in the range were rather poor.
Take a look at the basic tank wagon before modification, the detail on the solebars is much better than Dapols yet the model falls short in other areas.  As for the pancake motor I must have been lucky as both my old 55XX and Railcar were lovely runners. Though the 55XX was sold off years ago the railcar is still in service but these days runs on Ultrascale wheels.

Cheers,
Geoff

Evening All,
Today saw a little more work on the Hymek, outstanding jobs are the fitment of jumper cables, screwlinks and of course a loop for the S & W couplings.  The numbers from Fox have arrived and if you think you had problems fitting the 7mm version then spare a thought for me !

I started to weather the roof and bogie side frames, all was going well until I caught one of the air horns with a cotton bud. Luckily for me Heljan supply spares so all is not lost, anyway I couldn't resist coupling up to the milk tanks and taking a couple of pics.

Cheers,
Geoff

Evening All,
Thanks to the excellent photos posted here on this forum by Lancer I have started another milk tank.  If you are a purist then please look away now because once again the Dapol model has been used. This is just an early shot, the ladder wil be replaced with a brass one when I can find the etch !!  Headstock detail needs to be fitted together with couplings and the weathering completed.

Cheers Geoff

Geoff, looking at your brilliantly weathered milk tanks makes me think I should have another go at mine on Wencombe.

Evening Chaps,
Thanks for your comments, what is it about Hymeks and milk tanks that turn you on ?  ::)

Alan,
If you look back through my thread you will see what paints I used on the tanks should you decide to take the plunge !

I finished the third tank today and now need a break, the next batch can wait as I want to finish the Hymek over the weekend.
The next jobs to be tackled will be a Toad and some 5-plank opens together with the first of two Pannier Tanks. I have already fitted an Ultrascale EM wheel conversion set to my Bachmann model and now the good Captain has posted details of the sanding gear I have no excuse to hold the job back.
The second Pannier is being built around an old Mainline body which will be mounted on a Comet chassis with a large Mashima can providing the power. I started the build ages ago but you know how it is getting side tracked with other ideas.

Anyway a couple of pics. follow in an attempt to keep you motivated
  ;)

Hi Nice work Geoff!

I was wondering what it is about Hymeks and Milk Tanks that we all love I suppose that it is thoughts/memories of Hemyock?

Cheers

Morning chaps,
A photo taken at Newcastle Emlyn always springs to mind when I run the Hymek and tanks.  I always remember a 14XX or a Baby Warship with a station yard full of milk tanks when I think of Hemyock
You 7mm chaps are really lucky having the Slaters milk tank kit which seems tremendous value when compared with a certain 4mm kit.

The civil engineer will no doubt be having words about the Hymek being allowed up to Penhydd.

Evening Chaps,
Well D7017 has now become D7039 and is seen here setting back into the creamery sidings with empty milk tanks. Full buffer beam detail has now been fitted, the pipework is from the detail pack which comes with the model.  Screwlink couplings have been made up from Smiths etched components and is a job I hate, bi focals and a magnifier being essential. Not sure about the weathering yet, I will leave things for a day or two and see how I feel about it then.

With the Hymek complete apart from shed plates which are on order my attention is now focused on 4678. This is a Bachmann Pannier converted to EM with an Ultrascale wheel conversion set, pics. will follow once I have something worthwhile to show.

Enjoy your weekend,
Geoff

Nice one, but looking at that photo, the shunt ahead arm is rather difficult to see. Some sort of sight-aid might be requested by the loco crews: either a board behind it, or maybe a white patch on the bridge girders.

Just a suggestion, mind.

Hi Geoff
Great work as always with this  magnificent thread .  ive just obtained a oo heljan hymek but i wasnt that impressed with its build quality although a very smooth runner the bogie side frames are very loose and the body seems to be a loose fit also compared to its bigger brother in o gauge no sprung  buffers and no marker lights. re my 121 rebuild craftsman models were excellent, items were sent return post, but im still waiting nearly a month on for the bi directional lights  :headbang: re your signal a white backing board would be a nice touch  and enjoy your weekend also
