1st Dean Goods pic is brilliant!

Cheers Paul, I rather like that one myself, and this shot taken from a slightly different angle. It can be annoying though when you wedge your camera on a small bean bag, a Chris Nevard tip, set the timer, hope you've got everything in focus and get lucky. I think I actually get better shots when I don't use the tripod

Anyway time to create a nice mess as I thin down two metres of Ratio lineside fencing.

Evening All,

Just finished planting some trees, those of you who read MRJ will have no doubt seen Barry Normans article on tree making which appeared in No. 260. Having been challenged to see what I could do using the same materials, I came up with these specimens. I've still plenty to do in this area yet, a few young saplings, and bushes made from Seamoss are yet to be added along with some fencing.

The eagle eyed will also notice that the missing fishplates have now been added.

Another two shots looking in the other direction showing the new tree line.

I've also be messing about with mirrors to help disguise the end of the layout.

This is just one idea I have for disguising the mirror.........

Here's a quick fix Geoff.

Thanks for your quick fix Phil :)

Geoff, your footbridge idea looks really good.

As does the rest of the layout, of course!

Thanks Tim, if I went ahead with that, then the bridge would be a wooden one. Other things under consideration are a quarry conveyor belt shades of Arenig, or perhaps a water pipe?

Agreed - I think it's brilliant how you've managed to create so many different photogenic scenes from such a compact layout.

Thanks Adrian, I've a few more ideas yet ;)

I wonder if a tree (or trees) with suitable overhanging branches might fit a bit better with the rural aspect of the layout?

I'll give that a try once I've completed another four trees Neil, the main problem is disguising the joint at the top, and bottom of the mirror. So some trees as you suggest, with perhaps a water pipe as used by Iain Rice on 'Trerice' might just do the trick, it would certainly maintain the rural look.

Last week I knuckled down and finished a batch of eight trees, the trouble is, as you discover new materials and find better ways of doing things, earlier examples look rubbish. So rather than adding new trees I've been replacing older ones, such is progress!

These two in the foreground replace an earlier example that I was never really happy with. It was far too dense, the shape was wrong, I could go on and on finding fault, so it had to go.

At the moment I'm pondering whether to plant a smaller tree just in front of the cattle dock gate. A trial run looked rather good, but I'm wary of blocking too much of the view when looking towards the bridge.

Its late afternoon, and the shadows are getting longer, the appearance of a DMU is a mystery ?

The new trees look a lot tidier when looking from this direction, as for the fencing, well its taking longer than I thought to clean up the old Ratio mouldings. The amount of flash has to be seen to be believed, as does the mess as I trim the post, and rails down.

Geoff, the new trees look fantastic, but I have one query regarding the third picture, with the DMU in it (presumably a rail tour, by the way? ;) ) and that is whether the PW in that era would have permitted such a large tree to grow inside the boundary fence and so comparatively close to the running line? Forget 'leaves on the line', but rather think 'tidy infrastructure with the manpower in that era to maintain it' and the wish to avoid such trees blowing down in a high wind onto the track, etc.

Geoff, the new trees look fantastic,

Thanks Tim, that's very kind of you, I agree with you about the trees being close to the running line, and will have to do something about that. Good job they simply plug into the embankment ;)

Geoff

PS. The DMU was on driver training duties :)

Looks great Geoff, I think taking the time to make the trees really does pay off! Btw what paint do you use for your rail sides?
