Modelling a GWR prototype : CARROG in 4mm & 7mm.

I see it’s GWR!
I went for the Collett cab and the least expensive livery Paul. It'll get resprayed after DCC sound has been installed and get an early totem.

Jintyman reminded me today that in the O versus OO versus O tussle I gave him a box of O gauge track then he gave it me back then I gave it him again! So now he is giving it me back again. It's a good start.

OO Locos have been running again today to check everything before putting them up for sale.

I thought as much! I have an unopened box of Peco track here in France and can bring it over in mid-summer if you need it. Also a few points from Andy Peters that have been "bodged" a bit. Next time (if there is one) I am going to use Marcway points, etc. as I am very disappointed with the geometry of the Peco curved points. There is no constant radii on either curve which makes smooth running quite difficult for the larger locomotives. Jim Snowdon on GOG Forum has the full explanation of what is wrong with them. I am going to replace the track on the station loop to allow decent 6ft radius running.

Are you going to stick with your outdoor radii given that you are not going to run large pacifics, etc.?

Hi Paul,
The outside radius is 3' the same as on my pals colliery layout. The Ivatt 2-6-0 and all the plastic RTR locos have been tested on his layout so I am confident I can use existing garden loops. However, after watching Trikidikkis garden layout on here, I am very much minded to to remove one loop and extend the tracks down the garden.

Thank you very much for the offer of track, but knowing me, I will have finished the layout soon. I wont be using ther Peco curved turnouts because I found what you found.

No large loco this time unless a Manor is regarded as large. No one has done one yet but it wouldn't surprise me if one were announced in O gauge. I believe the 43XX 2-6-0 only has pick--ups on the Tender.

After my negative experience with the Large Prairie, which is now completely sorted and runs well, I cancelled the 43XX order, though another reason for doing so was that only later variants not covered by Heljan were suitable for my late 1950s timing. So I have an unopened Warren Shephard kit to work on one of the days. This looks to be a reasonably simple kit (fingers crossed).

I am not sure tender pickups only is a problem though. In my HO days I built several American style pickup locos which worked just fine. Perhaps the Heljan reason is the very loose slack on the 3 driving axles to allow negotiating 3 ft radius curves.

Took the top off the Dapol Pannier, but I cannot figure out how the underside of the tanks and boiler can be separated from the running plate. Looks like i am faced with some clever masking to protect the inside motion when spraying black paint.

Paul,

I have also decided to go down the same route as you with a 43xx.
Although the Heljan appears to be a "nice" model I see to have acquired long pockets and short arms and feel that Warrens kit is possibly better value with more weight to it.
My biggest fear is that with it being plastic there may well be some accidental breakages when handling the loco.

I will be very interested in your build.

With regard to tender pickups, my Warren Shephard Dean Goods ( 99% complete ) only has these fitted. I opted for the 2000 g tender and it performs very well with only the tender wheels receiving power.

Larry,

I am currently considering a re-spray to my Dapol 57xx too and would be interested to see how you manage to mask your model.

The inside motion would probably benefit from some light weathering but I am not certain what type of "plastic" has been used and whether it would take enamels without some flaking ?

Any thoughts ?

Further to the above I have looked at the instruction sheet for my 57xx and wondered if it replicates with your model regarding assembly of the main body to the chassis ?

Unfortunately, that sheet does not indicate how to remove the part that is left after removal of the 'top'. The good news for me is, I got back from Carrog to find pal PGH had found how to remove it. The pannier will become black tomorrow.

I look forward to your 7mm exploits, in due course and the speed with which the new layout appears from the ashes of the 4mm one.

The Dapol pannier was stripped down by friend PhilH of this forum....
WEB Pannier 4.jpg

The cabside etched plates were removed and the glue removed from the raised number plate surround. New plates are on order from 'Narrow Planet'....

WEB Pannier 1.jpg

Mascol protected the plates seeing as I was initially keeping them along with the whistles...
WEB Pannier 2.jpg

Kitchen tissue was folded and rammed into the cab to protect the interior while spraying...
WEB Pannier 3.jpg

Inside motion was masked off while the footplate and green parts on the running late were sprayed with Halfords Matt Black. The paint has been decanted into my spraygun. The tyres were brush painted with Halfords Acid 8 etching primer....
WEB Pannier 5.jpg

Job done. This was followed by a light coating of my diluted rusty-shade weathering colour (not shown here)...
WEB Pannier 6.jpg
It is currently having YouChoos sound fitted.

I know we have discussed the Compound sound on other forums and your demonstration sounds as good as it is going to get. I have this sound file on my wish list for my David Andrews Compound and the video has convinced me it is the one.

Thanks, Paul

I use a lot of Halfords spray paint on my live steam models it is very good, Can i ask you how do you decant it into a spray gun , And what is the advantage of doing this, Thankyou Garry

I simply spray it into the spraygun cup, or at least as much as will go in until it starts to swirl around and shoot out again. The advantage of applying spraycan paint through a proper spraygun is user control. A rattlecan nozzle and the pressure at which it leaves the can cannot be controlled. This doesnt matter when used on a car panel, but a small model is a different matter. By spraying matt black, satin black, matt lacquer and satin lacquer through my DeVilbis spraygun I can match the finish on most RTR locos. Halfords paint is far less aggressive and kinder on plastic than the cellulose I use on metal.
