Moulds & Resin Casting

I’m hoping to make some reasonably sized resin castings approx 300mm x 60mm x 10mm, can anyone suggest suitable makes or product details for both mould and the resin casting.

If you havn't done this before then Tiranti are a safe bet. If you want larger quantities and the costs are mountings, then speak to Alchemie.

I would second Tiranti's for reliable products and suggest you buy Sika Biresin G26 from them. It is more stable in the medium to long term than quite a few other polyurethane resins.

For a while in the 90's I was working for a novelty toy prototyping company, churning out resin castings to make tooling and paint masters for production. I couldn't tell you what resin and silicon to use, as I'm sure it's all moved on, but I reckon the use of a vacuum chamber hasn't. It is in my view the only way to make reliable tools at those kinds of sizes, then to produce reliable castings.

Of course things may have moved on again, but I'm fairly sure you still need to remove the bubbles.

You may have one already, in which case "I'll get me coat..."

Here in Australia I use Barnes Pinkysil cold cure silicon for moulds and their Procast a medium cure polyurethene resin with a shore hardness of 65D and 5 minute work time. Both are a 1:1 ratio mix by weight and cure at room temperature. As the other replies suggest Tiranti is possibly the best source for information and supply.
