7mm Mudhen's Workbench LNER/BR Q6

I thought it about time I started a 'build' thread and so here it is.
As young teenager I spent quite a bit of time with my cousin who lived in South Shields about 1/4 mile from Tyne Dock shed. Shed trips also included places such as Percy Main(J27s) and Gateshead( everything from A4s and Deltics to J72s). As a result I developed a love of the NE railways and particularly the area I remember well with its 9fs, Q6, Q7, WDs etc. A look at the Tyne Dock allocation in 'Shed by Shed' book produced by Tony Walmsley brings back those memories.
I bought the Q6 kit from Meteor Models many years ago and its lain untouched in a workshop cupboard until a couple of weeks ago. A few repairs to the shed meant I re-discovered the kit and made the decision to build it. Whilst not the latest state of the art it looks pretty good although a little basic but that can be changed. I've already had a bag of goodies sent to me Laurie Griffin Miniatures. The loco is to be built to S7 standards complete with inside valve-gear. Wheels and motor are be decided. The loco will be 63377 in 1962, a loco I copped and can get photographs of.
Initial progress has been on construction of the mainframes, foot-plate, cab front and sides, splashers and boiler.
Here's a few photos and some explanation.

Frames cut out for suspension and home made horn-guides fitted. I will be using CSB suspension and small holes are for pivot points.

I use the frames to assist in assembling the coupling rods. Stub axles with one end turned to 1.8mm are inserted into the hornblocks in the frames. the rods are placed over them for alignment and then soldered

Footplate with upper frames and beginning of smokebox sadle , buffer beam and draw beam assembled.

Boiler and smoke box put together.

DSCF3302.jpg

Frames temporarily screwed together with supplied spacers and washers to widen the frame spacing.

DSCF3286.jpg

Boiler sitting on frames to check fit.

Cab sides and spectacle plate are each two parts, base and overlay soldered together and then hand rail knobs soldered in.

Splashers and sandboxes, the third is obviously a casting.

So thats progress to date, a couple of weeks work so far, I work pretty slowly as there are too many other interests. Off to Geneva now to visit son and family then back to the build at the end of next week.

Looks good Tim!

You may find you need to remake the 3rd axle splashers though. I used the splasher castings on the N7's and caused all world of trouble with S7 as there wasn't enough clearance and caused major shorting.

Nice work Tim and pleasure to see it in the flesh on Sunday.

Did any of these or Q7s run with GST tenders?

MD,

Just to put you out of your misery, the Q7 used a flared tender similar to the Q6, NOT a GS one. And with such a numerically small class there is not much chance of 'on-offs'.

Any progress on the A8, or has that been replaced by the A7?

Peter, cheers

Not to divert Tims thread any further and to conclude any further discussion the plan was always A6, A7, A8.

DSCF3367.JPG Well back from holiday and a bit more has been done. I purchased a set of AGH turned wheels from a member of this board so that issue is resolved. I've assembled the frames and got it running smoothly although not with all the frame spacers yet. Final work on the coupling rod joints still to be completed. As said before I'm fitting CSB suspension and my first attempt has been fitted which seems to work OK. I'm only allowing a for a millmetre or so of movement which in some trials pushing it over obstacles on a piece of track appears to be enough. I've got several sizes of steel wire, guitar strings, and will see whats needed in size as the build progresses. I thought that I could double up on strands of wire to give me a variety of sizes unotainable as a single strand. only one photo but it shows what has been done in reasonable detail. Cylinders etc were started this afternoon, a few mods needed as I widened the frames to 29mm, thanks to the advice of East Side Pilot and Mickoo.

Thought it about time for an update, some progress has been made.

DSCF3431.jpg

The cab has been attached and the roof assembled although not soldered in place. One hiccup, on locating the cab on the footplate there was a 2.5mm gap beteen the spectacle plate and the back of the boiler, what had I done wrong? Well with a bit of checking after the inital panic i ealised the footplate was too long so out the the hacksaw, remove a chunk from the back and all is OK.

DSCF3435.jpg

Splashers sodered in place on the offside. Thmissing splasher on the 3rd axle is a casting, to be attached later in the build.

DSCF3440.jpg

Splashers attached on both sides.

DSCF3451.jpg

Chassis and body united to see how it looks. The boiler, dome, chimney and 3rd splasher are all loose until all holes are drilled for handrails, fixtures and fittings on the boiler. The boiler will be fixed to the spectacle plate and footplate with screws and nuts rather than be permanently attached. The chassis has been assembled in basic running form to check clearances and smoothness of operarion. The main change was exchanging the .5mm cyliner covers for some in .25mm nickel, much easier to form and attach. The intention is to fit inside motion but I'm a bit daunted by the fact that the inside valve gear is driven from the 3rd axle necessitating a lot of change in my valve gear kit of parts. It will have to bridge an axle before attaching to the motion plate and cylinders.

DSCF3459.jpg

Nothing different, just an alternative angle.

Overall I'm quite pleased with progree although I've got to learn about no-solder soldering and photography. A session with Mickoo is needed I think !

I have trawled my Q6 photos, over 200 of them, and these locos tenders changed like the weather. Especially 63429 in its time at North Blyth and its last shed at Tyne Dock. Also which boiler are you using. The boiler bands and dome position is in a different position to the original. I have the measurements, courtesy of Peter Shiels, if you want a copy.

Hi Tim,

I was talking to @eastsidepilot at Bristol and discussing the radius curve on Love Lane. He thought it was something in the region of 8ft 6? Will your Q6 get around the curves at that and if so what is your frame measurement, outside frame to outside frame please?

Cheers

Mick,
I will be working on Love lane tomorrow and hopefully we will have some of the curved track complete. I will take the Q6 over to check it out and figure any changes that might be necessary. I'll then post my results,
