new Lincoln railway footbridge

I had not been aware of these designs before but, my first impression is that simply to reduce waiting times for just pedestrians only at a level crossing, the whole thing is hopelessly over engineered.

It's not as if they are trying to provide a new way to cross the line - all they're trying to do is to reduce the time people have to wait for the train to go by - and to build such an elaborate bridge, complete with two lift towers, seems a scandalously expensive way to do it.

Surely a much more cost effective way to achieve the same objective would be to reduce the advance closing time for the gates by as much as 80% to bring them into line with other EU countries.

BTW - judging by some of the comments in that link, many of the local people feel the same way too.
