...this is one of those 'don't have a laithe' improvisation posts. Apologies if you have one, this will be an easy 'make' for you. I bought some tank vents from Laurie Griffin for an LMS tender and they were way too hefty, so I set about fabricating some. As luck would have it I had some 1.2 mm rod for the stem and two sizes of telescoping tube to go over the rod to give a big increase in diameter. The whole thing was trued up in a mini drill and filed to the correct shape. It can also be cut to size in a mini drill using a piercing saw.

holes were then drilled through the stem just below the 'mushroom' cap and flattened bits of rod soldered in them. These were shaped to represent the brackets that hold the cap onto the stem pipe.

Next, fitting up reversing lever and planking cab floor. Does anyone know if the W had lubricator boxes for the rear axleboxes on the tank sides inside the cab?........

When do you want to know Nick?

I will be working on the J72 later this week but the floor on that is fairly new so will be more like 'B&Q' best metric stuff - however, I am due at Locomotion for my railway medical on the 11th and I could measure up one of the NER locos on display there, if you can wait that long.

....so the front tank vents have been made. they are built from 1.4 mm tube telescoped over 1.2 mm tube. The base dimensions are shown and the side pipe is from 1.2 mm rod. brackets have been added from riveted strip. The vertical section of the angle iron that secures the cab roof has been added to the cab sides and front/rear.

Nick that floor really is lovely. Could you please share the spec of the material used and maybe signpost to a supplier please? Also is it one section with scribed lines or seperate planks ?

Thoroughly inspirational

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick. It's cut from a panel of 0.5 mm veneer I bought from a model RC boat and car shop here in Sheffield, now sadly defunct. I think it's hard wood because it has a red tint to it (hope it's not from an endangered rain forest!) and it has a close grain.

I thought I'd given you a chunk?

The secret really is cutting the strips evenly and chopping them round the cab detail. It takes forever.
