Oz7mm's occasional meanderings - 5" Gauge Met Bo-Bo

It was certainly pretty filthy when that photograph earlier in this thread was taken. I like all the chalk marks on the side.

That's really nice, I wouldn't worry about the naked underneath.

Did you manage to spring the axle boxes, that does help with such a long wheel base vehicle.

It's sprung. Slaters do one of their springing kits for it and as luck would have it there was one such kit among everything that was donated to us by the late James Bruxner. The vehicle does needs weight.

It really is quite naked underneath. It originally had two braking systems for working through to France. The French system was stripped out when it was taken off the Night Ferry service. Because there was so much brake gear underneath originally, the battery boxes were inside the van - I assume that was the reason. The small vent at the left hand end on the views I have posted are next to where they were sited. There's one on the other side as well. One of the few bits of bodywork apart from the roof that I had to scratch build. Most of it was cut and shut.

Very nice indeed! Do you have s colour reference for the green ends?

Adam

The photo is dated 1/4/68 - I don't think the April fools day is relevant. The notes on the back simply say body colour green. However as I want it as running a few years earlier for Love Lane I will repaint the ends black.

Do you know if the corner angle irons would have been painted black on the end face and green on the side face, or would they have been all one colour?

As you say, black on end face, green on sides. Neither the black, nor the green, go round the corners.

Ends now black using Vallejo black acrylic primer which brushes beautifully.

I am now struggling with some of the lettering. The transfer sheet in the Slaters BY van kit was actually more appropriate for the PLV/PMV kit and doesn't even include the BY designation. I contacted Slaters who say they don't actually do an appropriate sheet. I can't see anything relevant on a quick scan of Fox Transfers. Does anyone know a good source of yellow lettering in various sizes? I am currently trying to brew my own with decal sheet. It's so frustratingly close to completion.

Photo taken on Love Lane by the country end bridge, awaiting post lockdown beautification (or probably the opposite) by Peter Insole.

John,
Have a look at the HMRS sheets I left with you, if not Fox do letter & number sheets in various colours and size/scale.

Cambridge Custom Transfers do a sheet with all the various types of SR parcels stock (I haven't got my copy of Gould to hand and can't remember the diagram number), but sheet BL97 might well be the one: Cambridge Custom Transfers

Thanks to Adam for the pointer to Cambridge Custom Transfers which solved my problem of lettering. The window bars and grilles have been added leaving just the footboards and hoses to go. I'm still wondering whether to weather it as heavily as in the photo that inspired all this. I may have to keep eastsidepilot away from it!

So here's the almost finished article which will give a rather quirky look to one of the Love Lane parcels trains.

Back to the initial point of this thread. After a break of almost 18 months thanks to the pandemic - the Thursday afternoon Bo-Bo sessions have resumed. Something of a milestone this afternoon as bogie #2 was completed. We plonked the chassis and superstructure on them just to gee us up for the next stage.

Ooh John, that is looking rather tasty now! May I be so bold in asking for some more regular progress updates on this delightful project ?

Milestone moments are really good for the soul aren't they ?!

All the best,

Pete.

You haven't had regular updates because we hadn't worked on it since Covid struck.

Given this project now fulfils the Love Lane rule that if you create a surface, someone will leave something on it on a more or less permanent basis, the Bo-Bo now has its own table and stares at me in a guilty fashion when I enter the room. So maybe more will get done.

I must arrange with my friend David, who has a 5" gauge track in his garden, for an inauguration day.

Cheers

John
